Hey everyone,
I have a NE3/61 that I really enjoy playing, but was hoping to upgrade to a NE5D. I got to spend 45 minutes playing one the other day at a shop, and it sounded great (no surprise!), but had some thoughts and questions.
I really like the layout and ease of use on the NE3, I find it very intuitive, even if it is a lot more stripped down compared to the 5D. My initial reaction to the 5D and how the organ/piano/synth sections are setup was met with a little confusion. Granted, I only had limited time with it, and haven't read that manual, but having to select either organ/piano/synth sections through the two split points seems a bit puzzling to me, or maybe I'll get used to it? For example, if I activated the organ section (not split) through the lower part, I got different sounds compared to activating at only the upper part. Also, the prog/menu/list/value knob is a welcome addition, but it was a bit tough to figure out, especially considering it has four functions?
Nevertheless, I'm probably overthinking it, and would get used to the 5D interface. Anyone else who went from a NE3 to a NE5 have any comments or thoughts?
Going from NE3 to NE5D, questions.

Re: Going from NE3 to NE5D, questions.
I did exactly that- from NE3-61 to NE5D-61. I use it mainly on rehearsals (have a Nord Stage 2 at home) so i feel it take some time to remember the keystrokes needed for setting up - since I only use it one evening a week.
Some things are way better on 5D - like I use transpose a lot since I am an amateur player, and don't manage to transpose in head every time the singer wants to try another key.
The one thing I always find a little confusing is the the way Nord organizes their presets. Other manufacturer often group instrument types, but on Nord Electro 5D there is no logic at all. But you should build up your own set-lists witch is very useful.
If you use the instrument on a daily basis you will be a" Electro 5 Ninja" in just a few days - just read the manual about Set lists and split setup and you are ready to play

Re: Going from NE3 to NE5D, questions.
alexh4,
Three months ago I moved from the NE3seventythree to the NE5D-73.
With the old kb I barely accessed the interface controls except for program changes (once I set up all of them at the beginning). With the new kb... my situation has not changed (rather, it shomehow got worse, because of the setlist management).
Anyway, the sound quality of the Nord kbs makes the UX limitations (IMHO) non influential. I love my NE5D. Period.

The manual is available for download from the Nord website. Might not be a bad idea to think about giving it a look before emptying your wallet...alexh4 wrote:...Granted, I only had limited time with it, and haven't read that manual...
