Filter piano on The Beatles "Birthday"

Post by keyman27 »

Can anyone show me how to whip up a patch for the filtered piano on 'Birthday' by the Beatles? Probably have to use the synth side and load a piano sample, then you can apply the filter. But I can't match the sound on the record.

Probably do-able with just FX processing - try using the HonkeyTonk upright from the Nord piano library, then use some FX: Flange, also probably Delay. Turn on the Amp Sim and turn the treble down on the EQ, and some Reverb for good measure. Any good?

I use Honky tonk piano with a bit of flanger and eq (don't remember the settings right now).
Sounds quite close to the record, and it's easy to do.

(and don't forget the organ part for the chorus!!!)
;)

I did some Googling to find out how the Beatles made the original recording. Apparently they ran a mic'd up piano through a Vox Conqueror or Vox Defiant. Both models have a 3-position midrange booster knob -- this is the magic. The knob was moved between the 3 positions to get that sound. Here's a guy who recreates Beatles songs with the original gear (or close to it): You'll see the amp & hear the sound at 1:26. I'm still not getting close to this exact sound...

That's pretty awesome, and almost impossible to duplicate.

Hm. Amp simulator, yep. A bit of wah, controlled by a pedal, perhaps?

Yes, I think wah on the expression pedal is the best bet. It comes close!
