NLA1 muffled tones

Post by d3po1 »

Hi. I owned it a while, and i cant seem to get any bite from it. I know its not a virus
but the punch is not there either in the lows or highs. All i can get out of it sounds like
there is a veil of "muddy" tame tones thats never fits into my projects. Its like its muffled if
you get what i mean. Either i am missing some very important features or its is just they
way its suppose to sound??

Hej D3po1!

Are you testing with headphones, if your sound system is weird? :?
Are you listening trough a DAW - you might get phase cancelling - mute inside the DAW.
Are you testing with some factory patches?

Trust me - there is plenty of red bite in the lovely A1! 8-)

Hi, no i got it hooked up to monitors. I tried with the factory presets.
Even tweaking my own. For exemple some plucky sound with bite to it, how
would i do that proper without sustain?

Hej!

Try to find some OK headphones to test with, and wait for Pablo to answer ...

Sound like it doesn't quite meet your personal preference quite frankly. The A1 works fantastic in my studio and live setups. I think this thread is simply a case where the A1 doesn't live up to your standards rather than there is a problem with the A1. It's like I could say the Roland Jupiter 8 sounds muffled to me or something. The A1 is a great board, but it's not for everyone, just like the Nord Lead 3 for example. I do know that the effects can warm up the sound quite a bit when compared to something like the 2x or of course the 3. Best of luck.

I like to try to stay away from these kinds of subjective discussions. In a single day I might take emails from two different people complaining about the same thing, except that one person's complaint is the exact opposite of the other's. Different people have different ears...

Marlowes did mention a possibility, though, without putting much detail behind it (because it has been talked about so much in this forum), so perhaps you did not notice it, D3po1:

If you are, for example, connected L & R audio outs on the instrument to channels 1 & 2 on a mixer, those mixer channels need to be panned hard left and hard right. If they are both panned to the middle, much phase cancellation will be going on and it will sound mushy. It is best to lay out complete audio system detail, instead of just "I've got it hooked up to monitors."

I did hook it up to headphones, totally different experience so i had phase cancellation. Sneaky problem. In the audiointerface i have two
channels displaying sound and they are now hardpanned which sounds much better. Still not as upfront as in the headphones but its acceptable and
miles better than before
