The classic freestyler pluck sound.

I am wondering if anyone knows whether the Nord lead 2 was used to make the classic Freestyler pulse pluck sound. I love the sound and know that the producer (JS16) used to use his Nord rack 2 a lot back in the day. If someone doesn't know what sound I am talking about, here is a sample (right at the start):


I tried remaking the sound with Discovery Pro and it sounds kind of similar, but not really the same (see the sample). If anyone wants to attempt this I will share the MIDI.

I finally got around to make an attempt on this sound on my NL2! I made it using a mix of a pulse and a saw waves and the 24dB filter with no resonance, most of the magic comes from the short decay on both amp and filter.

Here's a little demo and a sysx-file (the demo also contains delay and reverb created in Logic).

Soo sorry! Have been super busy and somehow forgot to send the midi and some good info/pics. Thanks for the effort!

Anyway, it's not too close to the original actually. The original sound almost definitely uses either very quick (knob all the way down) PWM or pitch(synced) envelope that gives it the very distinct character.

First try using only a thin pulse wave with the quick envelope applied to the width (amount up all the way), if that doesn't sound good, sync the pulse wave and increment the pitch by about +7-9 and set the envelope to modulate the pitch instead of PW(downwards). Rolling off the attack on the amp/filter might also help a bit. It should sound much closer this way and hopefully closer than the discovery as well.

I haven't got around to try the pointers you gave, but I doubt i will get any closer. When i made the patch above, i tried lots of different ways to get the right attack/decay sound, and this was the closest.

I'm wondering, what is you're goal with this sound? How will you use it? I think the patch i made is good enough for any cover band recording or live playing, and i don't think any listener besides yourself will ever hear the difference in a mix....

I doubt you'll get any response, he's probably just another drive-by. I am wondering how come, if he's so sure he knows how it's made, he can't reproduce it himself. Giving you a lecture on how to do it when it clearly didn't work for him seems rather pointless.

Given his rather dismissive response to your work, I rather think the expression about "casting pearls before swine" seems appropriate here.
