Button Stuck (no suspension)

Post by TKay35 »

Hey there!

Didn't really know where to put this, thought that's the right place.
My nord stage 2 is pretty new and all I did after I got it was putting it on it's stand and always putting on the cover after playing.

For some reason the piano on/off button is suddenly stuck. It's pressed in and I have to pull it out and push it again everytime I want to use it.
Now my question, do I lose my warranty if I open it up? Or is it better if I just send it in and get it repaired?

I mean...it can't be that hard to fix.

Hi,

Maybe I missed a few posts on the forum but I never saw that case.
If your Nord is still under warranty, I suggest a phone call to the dealer/shop, he may tell you to bring the kb or try something.
You always put your cover on the keyboard, so I doubt it's a problem with dust, but having a "dustoff" pressurized air bottle is very usefull, and does no harm to try.

If blowing some air does not fix it, most likely you will need to replace the switch. Perhaps the spring mechanism is dislodged or broken.
Many switches cannot be easily disassembled and have rivets (metal or plastic). I am guessing that it might be difficult to open to fix it. The best bet is as frantzkb said and contact the service through the shop where you bought it and ask them. That is what I would do if still under warranty.

Thanks for the suggestions! It's really weird because I know I never droped anything on they keyboard and I always press the buttons gently.
I guess the mechanism is just a bit dislocated. Can I use a normal compressor too? Or is dustoff something else than just air?

Thanks again!

Pressurized air is the idea, do not put too much pressure / compression ;)
There isn't a lot of space around this button ... no way to see anything without opening the box ...
Under warranty it's really worth a phone call to the dealer.
Here is the deal / temptation :
I would not do that.
It's wiser to put the instrument into qualified hands.

It would seem most likely that you are dealing with a switch with a failed return spring. Blowing air on it, whether from a can or a compressor, will not somehow magically correct this problem. It is a virtual certainty that the switch will need to be replaced. People who are skilled with soldering may wish to handle this themselves, but for an instrument which is under warranty IT WILL BE BEST TO SEEK PRO HELP.

Having the same issue on my Nord Electro 5HP. Both Delay and Reverb on/off switches compress, but I have to manually pull them back up. It's just past the year warranty from where I purchased it (Guitar Center) so they won't fix it. Are newer boards/buttons any different? Or do they still need to be replaced to fix the springs?

The switches are supposed to be rated for 1 million cycles, so a switch failure seems unlikely (but not imipossible)... I suggest you check if the switches are binding in the opening of the control panel.

Perhaps something sticky got spilt in the the openings or transfered onto the keys or perhaps the circuit board is misaligned causing the binding. A picture of the keys might help confirm this last possibility.

Button switch failures on Nords are extremely rare. In 6-1/2 years I can count the number of reports I've had on this on two hands and have fingers left over. As far as I can tell, all Nords ever made have used the same high-quality German brand Marquardt switch with gold-plated contacts. Perhaps there is a slight misalignment of the panelboard which is causing these two to chafe against the chassis?

In any event, I invite you to contact me at work at your convenience. I am your Nord Tech Support rep.
