Joe Bonamassa

Post by shark »

Well Joe was in town yesterday so I went to see him. To make it relevant for the forum here's what I observed regarding the rig of keys man Derek Sherinian:

He played mainly on a real B3 over two Fender heads: I couldn't see a leslie so I assume he had a ventilator, two synths on opposite sides used mainly for strings and... a red keyboard I assume was a Stage or an Electro. Now here's the surprise: he only used it for Rhodes parts.

So while this forum is somewhat unhappy with Nord's Rhodes emulation, this pro is confident enough to use it live. If he thought the sound wasn't up to par I assume he would have played a real Rhodes, since he's already hauling a B3 the extra weight and size of a Rhodes wouldn't make a difference.

The question begs: why didn't he use the Nord for the Hammond parts?

ciao

Did you get a clear view of the actual B3? Not sure what Derek uses, but LOTS of major touring acts hide Nords in old organ chassis', piano chassis' and even wurly chassis'. They have Stage/Art Directors who insist on the vintage look and sometimes have carpenters fabricate phony instrument chassis' from scratch to look a certain way.

Again, not saying that Derek does this, but many many do.

Bless,

Pablo

I know what you mean and have seen some acts "faking" the b3 the way you describe it. I was facing the back so no way of telling, but I did see him stretching his leg to reach a swell pedal sometimes so that could be a clue.

I also found some recent pictures of his 2014 tour and it does appear to be the real McCoy. Funny enough on these pictures I can see a Rhodes!
