Monitor choice for MOJO

Post by Six-string-man »

Well guys, my new Mojo has arrived! The build quality looks first class, Andrea kept me informed by email every step of the way (many thanks for that), and I even got a small unexpected discount for buying two pedals at the same time as the keyboard.

I haven't really had time to do anything with it yet, apart from plug it in and make sure that there is actually sound coming out of it. However, I have an Electro 4, and it sounds better running through my set-up than the Mojo does. Obviously, I'm going to run through the different tonewheel settings, and I have a Burn, but I want to get the basic sound right first. If any Mojo users have any advice on that, it would be gratefully received BTW.

I have read various posts saying that some keyboards sound better through different monitors. I am currently using a pair of Tannoy P6's, and the Nord sounds great through them. I must stress that I'm just a bedroom player, and that the monitors are just about four feet from either end of the keyboard. I will never be gigging.

Bearing this in mind, I wonder if anyone could recommend the best choice from the following (I would be buying a pair). I am more interested in sound quality than volume.

EV ZLX12P (£329 each)
EV ELX112P (£527 each)
Yamaha DXR10 (£469 each)

I realise that I will probably have to go out and audition them at some point, but am just interested in opinions ATM.

I did consider the QSC K10's, but at £639 each, they're well out of my price range. In fact, I'm hoping that you all come back and say that the ZLX12P's would be best for my purposes. :)

Thanks.

Just a few words about sound on the Mojo (another owner here). You have treble an bass EQ knobs directly, and a second way is to influence the balance between rotor and horn of the (virtual) leslie by pressing "shift" and turnig the "bass" knob. Don forget to exit the shift-mode. Tonewheel-set, leakage and crosstalk are also important. Also reverb, click, percussion volume. I prefer tonewheel set #4. The Crumar Mojo is really awesome.
There is a Mojo owners board

Have a look over there, and have lots of fun!
BTW: I enjoy my NE3 everytime I use it, it is my rehearsal and jam-session instrument, much better schlepp-factor than the Mojo...

2 EV zlx12P's in stereo sound incredible with the nord c2. I don't know what it would sound like with the mojo but for organ they definitely handle the full range and kick some serious volume.

hello ,

How is the mechanical BLACK-key-stability of your Crumar Mojo ; it uses the FATAR 61TP/8O keybed

Specially cause of this message from KEN on the NORD USER FORUM :

" if anyone has any info on how to eliminate the lateral play that exists for the black keys on this keybed. You can move the black keys from side to side, and in doing so, create a creaking/squeaky sound that is really annoying. This has existed ever since I purchased the keyboard. The white keys are fine and don't have this play. Normal playing results in this noticeable sound, and it's a minor annoyance unless you are playing loudly. Any idea about that " ?

All that I can say it that there is minimal lateral movement of the black (or white) keys on either of the two manuals on my board, and there is absolutely no creaking or squeaking sound.

Sorry I can't help you, but really glad that my board is fine ;)

Hey SSM,

If you are just a bedroom player that never gigs, then you do not need a PA kind of solution, maybe a pair of active studio monitors to replace your current ones will do nicely. Studio monitors are usually cheaper and have better quality but cannot take road abuse, they are smaller and therefore have lower volume. You could look at some here: http://www.sweetwater.com/c405--Active_Monitors or here: http://www.thomann.de/gb/active_nearfield_monitors.html

In your case, you could even get a small mixer to be able to play both at the same time through speakers.

Saludos,
Gustavo
