NL2X recordings are thin sounding

Post by Analog Archangel »

Hey everyone :)

I have a problem when it comes to recording my Nord Lead 2X
I use Cubase to record audio from my Nord Via MIDI tracks into audio tracks, my setup is like this. NL2X > Rackmount FX > Analog Mixer > Soundcard.
Whenever I play back the audio via MIDI from Cubase the Nord sounds fantastic it sounds fat and very aggressive, but whenever I record it into an audio track it sounds very thin and has lost it's lower frequencies.
Now the way I have it routed was I initially had it routed like this: 2 instrument cables from out a and out b of the NL2X into rackmount fx which has the same outputs going into a stereo track in my mixer, no EQ settings on my mixer. I have tried recording by bypassing the rackmount FX all together, and I have also tried leaving tons of headroom an peaking at -12db and still getting the thin sound.
So I tried re-routing my nord differently, and instead of using the stereo track this time, I used 2 regular tracks on the mixer one cable in one and one in the other and panned them hard left and hard right, but yet again, same thing occurs.
It definitely is the NL2X, because I've tried recording my x0xb0x and the recordings are very fat.
So would anyone be able to tell me exactly why it's doing this and how I can correct this? All help is very much appreciated, thanks a bunch!

When you play back the recorded audio track, do you switch off the MIDI track? Maybe you get the audio AND the MIDI track playing again, so there is some kind cancellation?

Second the cancellation idea. First thing that came to mind was that something was out of phase.

No, I always solo the recording after it's done recording. But I have heard that the Nord does do some sort of phase cancellation, but the root of the problem is ?

soloing wouldn't matter if there was an issue during the recording process. id recommend taking one channel out of the nord, into one channel of your audio interface and recording just that as an experiment. do you get the same result?

Make sure of your output settings. Sounds like you want A & B panned Left and Right, and C & D the same as A & B.

So, I've tried doing the mono thing, same results. Tried doing the shift+local>off, same results, I was suggested something over at the homerecording forums and that was to try plugging it directly into the soundcard, but I would have to get a cable like this oneImage
Think this might work?

They're already in the mixer panned hard left and panned hard right

I meant the output settings in the Nord menu. Check out the manual at pages 63 and 64.
