Regret that I sold my dear Lead 2X. But I think the keybed is really poor ... compared to my Stage 2. Probably the same with the Lead 4.
Tonight I saw an ad for a used L4R. At an OK price.
Would I be missing something really important if I bought that and ran it as an external unit with my Stage 2?
I am so impressed by the videos with Federico and the L4! And so many hot patches already.

NE3HP, NP88, NS2, DPP1, NL2X, NL2X, NLA1, NL4, NE5D, NW2 (Collect Them All?), some classic Rolands, Arturias, a Waldorf, a Kurz, a WONOK3, a pile of guitars, a P-bass, loopers, amps and computers ... I'm a gearslut!
Never had the 2x but i bought the N4R and i liked it so much i added the N4 KB last week.. keyboard feels ok it's not the best (no aftertouch) but the sound is great.
You might want to hold out for the A1 though. There are some fx on the N4 that i wouldn't wish on a bad soft synth aka Talk FX x2. Still i use external fx so it's the main sound of the Nords that count for me which are great.

My issue is; what can I not do with an external keyboard (for example my Stage 2) and the 4R?

access to the Impulse Morph buttons is the only serious issue you face -- if that's serious to you
also, be aware that the functionality of rack units is slightly different. On keyed versions of all Nord Leads, slots are enabled/disabled by hitting their respective buttons. On rack units, slots are always alive, regardless of whether LED is lit or not, and will always respond to incoming midi data on the channel(s) to which they are set. It is done this way by design based on the assumption that the rack unit will not necessarily be mounted in a position within arm's reach.
Others' opinions notwithstanding, the Talk f/x will allow some pretty radical sound manipulations which cannot be achieved by other means. Ultimately, it all comes down to your personal preferences. If this job has taught me anything, it is that different people have different ideas about what sounds good to them -- they have different musical needs. These blanket statements as to what is good and what is not are patently absurd. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder.
Someone recently pointed out that perhaps making major instrument purchasing decisions shortly before NAMM might not be the smartest move. The same might be said about Messe, which is only about six weeks away. PLEASE NOTE: this is NOT secretly coded info coming from an insider with special knowledge of any future product developments, just common sense. Consistent with previous practice, the A1 was revealed to me approx. 48 hours before the NAMM show opened.

Now, I'm a happy old man again - bought a new nice L2X yesterday
The L4/A1 situation just makes me confused. (But I love watching Federicos videos, over and over again. He's amazing!)
And I suspect Roland Kuit wanted me to go for some Modulars ... please, forgive me Roland!
This weekend I'll spend tweaking the L2X, drinking scotch and feel that spring is approaching!
