Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
Hey all,
Maybe a small stupid question but I can't find it in the manual. Is it possible to make the knobs on the NL4R to pick up the values instead of snapping them?
Now when I switch to a preset and turn a knob, the value snaps to the knob's position making the sound jump to that value. I want it to pick up the value first so that I don't have sudden changes when jumping between presets (A,B,C... slots) and turning the knobs.
Thx

Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
It isn't currently possible but I wrote to Clavia requesting the same behavior (also made a post in another thread here about the same thing). I would suggest you doing the same. I imagine the more people asking for it, the more likely it'll happen. The current behavior of snapping to values suuuucks when on stage.
Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
Hmm, it surprises me this is not possible. That's certainly a downside of the current firmware I think. Hopefully they'll include this in an update.
Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
So it wasn't a stupid question.
I will also contact Nord-Lead with it. Thx

Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
Had a reply today off Nord-Lead tech support from someone at M-Works.
He said that this isn't possible because the knobs aren't "endless rotary encoders". And he adviced me to use the "morph" functions if it's needed for a live performance.
To be honest, I don't know what to think off it. I don't see why it should be endless encoders to pick up a value, yes if you want to start directly from that value, but not to pick it up. Or am I wrong?

Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
I'm fairly certain my novation ks4 could do this and that def did not have rotary encoders.
Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
What I thought. I replied the guy with the question if he could ask Nord-Lead if this is coming in a future OS update.
Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
DSI switched from rotary encoders to pots on its Prophet 08 several years ago. According to the manual, they have three different modes with one (relative) that picks up the value. So apparently the Nord Lead tech is wrong. Here is the relevant text from the Prophet manual:
PotMode: Relative (default), Passthru, Jump – On the Prophet ’08, 38 of the 52 front panel controls are potentiometers or “pots.” (The pots have about 300° of travel; the encoders are “endless.”) There are three pot modes to determine how the synth reacts when the related parameters are edited.
When set to Relative, changes are relative to the stored setting. In Relative mode, the full value range is not available until either the minimum or maximum value and the respective lower or upper limit of the pot’s travel is reached.
For example, the Oscillator Mix parameter has a value range of 0 to 127. Let’s say the physical position of the Oscillator Mix pot is the equivalent of a value of 100. If you switch to a program that has a stored Oscillator Mix setting of 63 10
and turn the pot all the way up, it will only go to 90. To get to the maximum value of 127, you first have to turn down until the value is at the other extreme and the pot is at the limit of its travel (in this case, 0 and fully counter-clockwise, respectively).
In Passthru mode, turning the pot has no effect until after the edited value equals the preset value (that is, until the edited value “passes through” the stored value).
Jump mode uses an absolute value based upon the position of the pot when edited: turn a pot and the value jumps immediately from the stored value to the edited value.

Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
I've got a reply off the M-Works guy. He said he had misunderstood me and will forward the question to Nord-Lead. He will then come back to me...
Re: Nord Lead 4 Knob Pick up values
That was quicker then I thought. I got a reply.
So we have a maybe... Like "chvad" says, the more we asks, the better chance we have getting it.
The guy at M-Works told me that he will keep an eye on the matter and ask it again at the fair in Frankfurt?Nord-Lead wrote:We are aware of the demand for this function in our products, however I cannot make any promises whether or not this will be implemented in the Nord Lead 4/4R.
