How to choose between Nord sounds and VST sounds ?

Finally managed to get the nord lead 2 making some sounds , but I have a few questions that Im hoping you guys can help with.

I've got to the point where I can play either the Nord on its own , by pressing the "local" button , and if I press program A , I can hear the selected VST synth PLUS the nord , which I don't want yet.

How do I play ONLY the vst synth ?

Another question I have is about layering. When I hear both the nord and the vst together , the nords own sound is much quieter. How do I make it the same level as the VST its playing ?
Also , when I get the hang of layering programs together , how can i layer both those , and the sound of a VST , all together , so I can record it to a piano roll as a multi-layer NORD / VST combo sound ?
