Connecting Electro 4D

Post by pp3f4577 »

Hello !
I'm asking myself if I can Connect a Nord Wave through the "Monitor In" in the connection pannel ?
THe idea is to link two keyboards (a Nord Wave through an Electro 4D) in order to get only one output to the amplifier.
Thanks !

Not possible, unfortunately.

The 'monitor in' audio is only heard through headphones and bypasses the line outs.

Cheers,
James

But I think you can use the headphone output jack as the main outpu if you wish, although I don't think it's ideal.
In Wales, no one will hear you scream.

Yes, through the headphones out, but be careful with the output level which will be higher than the line out and might distort (and potentially damage? not sure) whatever you connect it to.

You'll also want to use a Stereo TRS 1/4" (usually when doing this in a keyboard rig it's a splitter that goes into two TS mono instrument cables) instead of plugging a regular instrument cable into the headphone jack. Like Mr_-G- said, it's going to be hot so your master level should be lower than usual.
Theory.

Nord's Monitor In feature is intended to enable simple rehearsal functionality, playing along with mp3 player, etc.

It is not intended to replace a keyboard line mixer. While it is technically possible to go this route, you will be degrading the quality of your sound by misusing the Monitor In input and the Headphone Output in this fashion. The Monitor In is not designed to take a keyboard input and the headphone output not designed to feed an amp input. Handled with precision and care, this setup will yield inferior results. Handled casually, it will yield terrible results and, as pointed out above, possibly damage your amp.

Most folks who buy Nords do so in large part because they are concerned with sound quality. It's probably a safe bet that these same folks are also concerned with the quality of the performance. But the final link in this chain is the amplification of the performance. It would seem a shame to expend all that energy, time and money not only in getting the best sounding instrument on the planet, but also in practicing one's art and craft, only to muck it up in the end with a MacGyver'd amp rig.

Optimal results will be had by using a mixer of some sort... I've been very fond of my 1U Ashly for a long time, but in the last year have begun using Presonus which gives HUGE sound control possibilities (EQ, compression, f/x, etc.). Tascam has a real nice 1U unit out now, and for the budget-minded set there's always the Behringer at ~US$100. And there are many more to pick from. One doesn't buy a Ferrari, pour kerosene in the tank, and expect it to perform well...

just my two centavos...

Bless,

Pablo

Thank you, Pablo, for your two centavos of advice.

I'm going to put my old Toft AFC-2 preamp into rotation now, as a boost, going from the E4D into my new JBL PRX 715 combo amp. Don't know why I didn't think of trying this before I read your post??
