Nord Lead 3 Rotary Encoders

Post by AtomicFox »

Hi, I have a NL3 and just found out that the Rotary Encoders cause some major malfunction in the keyboard and that's why they removed them from the NL4. Does anyone know what problem they cause in the NL3 keyboard and if there are any prevention methods or precautions that I can take to preserve it for longer? Please Help!

Has anything actually gone wrong with your NL3?

Nothing as of yet, but since it's a second hand, I'm not certain if it has been repaired before.

Maybe the NL4 has no encoders w/leds because it is cheaper/less complex to design them that way?
Is this a well known problem?

I agree with Mr_G - I'm more inclined to think the reason Nord no longer use the rotary LED encoders is purely down to price and perhaps supply.

Don't worry - if it's not broken, then there is nothing to fix. Enjoy your NL3 :)

It's a shame if they removed the Rotary Encoders in order to cut the cost. They are so beautiful on the NL3. Anyways, thanks the help guys!

The Stage line of keyboards still uses them; the Stage 2 has 8 of them I think. The light show on the Lead 3 is 3.25 times better though, with its 26 encoders with LED rings.

As for issues with the Nord Lead 3: the only issue I've come across is issues with the power supply. I've posted something about this here: http://www.norduserforum.com/nord-lead- ... tml#p32294

If you have strange crashes/hangs when playing at gigs but not at home (for example), you might be impacted by this. What seems to happen is that the voltage on the 3.3V output of the power (which feeds the DSPs and the LEDs) supply dips low enough for long enough for one or more DSPs to crash (or at least behave erratic). Judging from posts I found on the net, this issue seems more common in the US than in Europe. It does not damage your equipment, but of course is rather annoying and maybe even nerve wrecking (when playing live). If you run in to this you could have the power supply slightly modified, but don't fix it if it ain't broken (tm).

Speaking of light shows: here's my Nord Rack 3 sitting on my Virus TI2, after I gave it a good cleaning when I bought it (I'm the 3rd or 4th owner).
