Yamaha Xenon Pad

Post by metalfingers »

If you can believe it, the keyboard I had right before my NS2 was a Yamaha PSR-270. Yep, this bugger. It had exactly one good sound on it, which Yamaha called the Xenon Pad. It's a very breathy choir-oohs type instrument which I have found useful for some worship scenarios and atmospheric music, but have not been able to recreate with FM synthesis nor Nord's online samples. Set your release time LONG! 1s is about right for me.

I'm home on Thanksgiving break and thus have access to that old PSR-270 which my sister inherited. So I took the liberty of sampling it from that board and making a NSMP.

The .nsmp file is attached. A zip file with all the .wav samples and the project file is available here.

I've done my best to keep noise levels to a minimum, but the synth it came from is a really noisy board.

I have received absolutely no permission whatsoever from Yamaha to sample their decade-old sound. We all know how badly their sales will be devastated by one sound being made available to a bunch of Nord owners (who are far too pretentious to give Yamaha their money anyway). ;)

One bug right now is that it's coming out an octave high on the NS2, even though I corrected this in the sample editor. Thoughts...?

Hi metalfingers, nice sound and sample creation!
My first keyboard was a Yamaha PSR as well , but it took me many trades and years since then. I admit, a direct stp to the NS2 is a huge leap ;-) Enjoy it!

Regarding the octave of the sample, it could be related to a discussion somewhere (http://www.norduserforum.com/nord-elect ... t1334.html) about different interpretations of the MIDI Octaves. Apparently there is not a clear definition of the according MIDI notes to octaves (or something like that, vaguely), which could explain your result. So one way would be just to change all the samples by one octave in the NSE. Otherwise its no big deal.

Thanks for sharing and have fun with your NS2! You probably will miss the accompagniements of the PSR ;-)

Oh how I wish that were more true
Yamaha has gotten plenty of my money over the years.
Lets see...
There has been:
YC45D, CP-30, CP-35, CS-50, CS-60, SK-30, CP-70B, CP-80B, GS2,
DX-7, DX-5, DX-1, DX-100, CS-70M, DX-7 II, TX-802, TG-77,
SY-99, S-80, P-200, Motif Rack, Motif ES.

They were all great instruments in their time

Thanks metalfingers, for sharing your samples with us.
Cheers, Hanon

I agree, if you could post the wav files and the project file maybe we can find a shorter loop. Is that possible?

Edit: yes it is possible, the link was in the original post!
