Electronic Drums with NS2

Post by jro_sf »

I'm curious of what people have done to have electronic drums while playing their NS2. This is an open question. What set-ups do people recommend so they can play on thier NS2 and have a beat going on in the background-- Hardware or software (other than a real drummer).

Hey jro_sf, I personally go all software for this. I started with just garageband playing loops or making my own drum loops, then upgraded to Logic Pro (and MainStage) and now I pretty much only use Ableton Live. It's very intuitive and easy to use. There are plenty of cheap or free plugins that can play just about any style of drumming so really the possibilities are endless!

I use Superior Drummer 2.0. It's very real sounding but pricey.

I mainly use it for recording, but for jamming you can drag and drop a drum midi file into Logic pro and set it to loop while you're playing your Nord.

I have a question about this as I am looking at a Stage 2 or Electro and wondering about drums. Does this require a laptop or ipad if you are performing live?

Thanks

You would need a laptop to run memory-heavy software. I'm using Logic Pro 9 and Superior Drummer is an additional plugin. The laptop would need to be quite stable if you were performing live.

A hardware drum machine may be a better option for you if playing live. Someone on this forum may do this who would be more helpful, as I don't perform live with drum loops.

Thanks- I use Ableton. Any particular VSTs you recommend- free or cheap?

I may consider Superior Drummer but looks a little more than what I need for now.

Is using the Ableton drum sounds (in a drum rack) an option?

Monotribe. I mainly use it to do simple rhytms,, which is what I need most of the times. Plus it also serves as a small bass sequencer.
