Electro 5 MIDI keyboard for piano but not clav

Post by damir94 »

Hi everyone,

On the Electro 5D, is it possible to use a separate MIDI keyboard so that the external keyboard only triggers acoustic and electric piano sounds and that the Nord keyboard only triggers organ and clavinet sounds?

I understand that different sections can be separated by keyboards. So organ on Nord + piano on external keyboard = ok.

But since the clavinet sounds are part of the piano section I'm not clear on whether these sounds can be played from the Nord keyboard while the other piano sounds are played from the external keyboard?

Hi, you can't do that because as you correctly say you can assign a Section to external keyboard and on NE5 you only have 1 Piano section which can only play 1 sound at a time, so if you assign the Piano section to ExternalKeyb for the Clavinet you cannot use it for anything else (while on Nord Stage you have 2 Piano sections so on NS it is possible to play a Clavi on extern and a piano on the NS itself).

Thanks! That's what I feared. Two potential solutions that I want to run by you:

1. Assuming the clav and the other piano sounds do not need to be used simultaneously, is it possible to achieve this keyboard separation on the NE5 by having one midi routing for the piano section in one program/song/setlist (acoustic and electric piano through external keyboard) and another midi routing for the piano section in a different program/song/setlist (clavinet sounds through Nord keyboard) and just switch between those programs/songs/setlists live in a quick and simple way?
2. If the above is also not possible, is the Electro 6 capable of doing this? I'm assuming not since it seems to have the same limitations as the 5?

Same on the electro 6.

What you can do (at least on the NE 6), is to use a clav-sample from the synth-section.

The 1 is possible (assignment to ExternalKeyb is per Program: I suggest you study carefully the MIDI section of NE5 manual, where it explains the "Upper Receive Mode" feature), for the 2 see the response by ggoebel above.
