Possible to load Stage Manager Backup file from my NS4 73 Compact to a NS4 88?

Everything about Nord keyboards in general; which one to choose, the sound manager, sample editor, and general discussion about the sample and piano libraries.

Possible to load Stage Manager Backup file from my NS4 73 Compact to a NS4 88?

Post by Calverhaller »

I have a gig I'm flying to and not taking gear other than pedals & patch cords. Thankfully a NS4 88 is available. If I take just my laptop with my NS4 73 Compact backup file on it, I'm thinking it should be pretty seamless to upload it to the rental NS4 88, right?

I imagine the interface / location of buttons, etc. is a bit different which I can deal with I think, but hoping the sounds would come across ok.

thanks in advance

There is no difference apart the number and type of keys (and the relative position of PB and MW), you can restore the backup and use your Programs as usual, they will be 100% the same.

It might not hurt to update the OS (to the latest or at least the same) on both NS4s before creating a backup and using it on the borrowed keyboard.

Good point, I didn't mention but it is a "must do" so better have on the laptop also the latest OS updater (or ask the local service that provides the NS4 88 to check it before the gig).

.. and update your's to the latest OS version before you save the backup if your NS4 73 is not up-to-date, to have a clearly defined state. Still take the latest OS updater with you in case the NS4 88 onsite is at an outdated version of the OS

Make sure you leave enough time to complete the restore.

If the NS4 has similar loading speed to the NS3, then it could take 1.5 to 2.5 hours to restore a backup that contains a lot of Piano and Synth samples that aren't currently loaded on the target NS4.

Please note that Stage 4 up to Panel Version 2.1, or was it 2.0, Rev. A and Rev. B onwards are instruments with different performance characteristics. With the older panel versions, some parameters cannot be stored per voice. This could cause problems with backups between different panel versions. If there is no Problem to perform the backup you might not get the same sound, at least you use this parameters.
So, to be save, you should check the Panel version of the two Instruments.

Thanks all, this was very helpful — my OS was up to date but the rental was not of course.

As it happens I actually did the restore first, and so a bunch of version errors came up on the NS4 88, but a quick update of the OS to the 88 after the restore from backup and everything was peachy!

And yes, it took about 2h for the clean + restore to happen.
