Yamaha DXR10 MKII and NS3 73
Have read several posts and hope for some direction on speaker. I’m contacting sweetwater tech to see if they can help with the dxr I bought 5 yrs ago. Is it on the fritz? I don’t know since I’ve owned a few of the models and never had issues with them. Is it supposed to get really hot in the back panel where the fan is? Maybe the fan is no longer working.
I only use one speaker for home and only gigging out recently since purchased as monitor. Either sound guy provides a monitor, or I use my Everse 8. Just use one line in mono. No judging…it works well for my bands.
I have always been pleased with the clarity of the dxr’s, 10, 12…in that I can dial in all EQs and parameters and hear every detail. I sold the dxr 8, because I didnt feel enough sound, and I use many variety and sounds, Org, P, and synth, typically a separate program for each song. I think most important for me is to be able to tweak sounds at home and hear them as close as possible to what I dream up in my house- this way I can tailor to the bands expectation and mix, and know what I’m going to sound like, given any challenges of playing live…know my sounds, know how far I can push them if and when needed.
So, the dxr has been a good marriage for me. Should I break up? Just wondering if someone weighs in to help my decision. Getting no response from social groups.
I’m looking to drastically reduce gigging and have about 7 more band commitments this summer. Saying this, I’m strongly working to retire the band work, except if very minimal (if I played out 3x /yr I’d be content. My dream is to add a Piano 5 73, to my compact, or the SL88 GT, to stretch my fingers and play more piano.
So, I have about nine C notes to spend, and must have a powered speaker for the nord, even just one will do! I’m considering QSC 8.2k, but other posts say the first v is better. I could do the 10, but other posts say the 8 is better and smaller, lighter.
I hear the spacestation is awesome but I missed the boat, when it came out I think I coukd have bought for $800, so out of budget.
Anyway, if the Yaammy decides to burn, I must have a speaker, so I’m just beginning research.
Cheers! And TIA

Re: Yamaha DXR10 MKII and NS3 73
Considering that you're close to "retiring", perhaps spending $$$ on something brand new is not the way go, since it might possibly have a short length of employment. Maybe you can find a used DXR in good shape for less money. It's something you know well and can dial in on Day 1.When you stop playing, you can can turn it around and recoup a bit of your expense.
Another option is consider getting your current speaker examined and repaired if the fan is truly toast.
Save your funds for your retirement rig. You're going to want nice home speakers for that Piano 5.

If you are considering a K8.2, also consider the CP8. I sold a pair of K8.2s and bought the CP8s. For my ears, out of the box they sounded great for everything, including acoustic piano.

Re: Yamaha DXR10 MKII and NS3 73
I'm a big fan of the newer columnar speaker designs (an array of small drivers above, a small sub below). A single columnar unit will easily outperform a single box point source speaker for many applications, including yours. I use them when doing duo/trio work, and when I need stage amplification for a well-behaved band. And I have plenty of other speakers to choose from.
They typically have great dispersion (everyone can hear you), crystal-clear mid-highs (your APs sparkle), as well as some bass authority when needed. Transport and setup are pretty easy as well.
Stay away from the low-end models (they have artificial bass boom) and you'll be fine with any of these ... but may want to spend a bit more than $900 USD if buying new. I see used versions routinely on Reverb, FB, CL etc.
RCF Evox, QSC K Column, EV Evolve, Bose L1, Yamaha StagePas, TurboSound inSpire et. al.

Re: Yamaha DXR10 MKII and NS3 73
Hi Mel,
I just wanted to put in a good word for the Electro-Voice Everse 8. I've been using one for about a year now and I really like it.
It's got a built-in rechargeable battery that will power it for at least 6 to 8 hours at fairly high volume levels and I think it sounds great for venues of up to 150 people or so. I love the weight of this thing too: 17 pounds!
For most gigs I put it up on a speaker stand. That makes a big difference in how big a space it will cover. Amazon sells an "Amazon Basics" stand for $28 U.S. The Everse 8 is currently selling for around $800 U.S.
I think the fidelity is quite good. If you don't do a lot of large venue gigs you might want to look into this speaker.
Incidentally, I used to have an older Yamaha DXR10 and it was an excellent speaker. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the DXR's. But my battery-powered Everse 8 will handle 90% of the gigs that the DXR10 would handle.
Good luck!
Dennis

Re: Yamaha DXR10 MKII and NS3 73
Posting again about speakers helped me think, and thanks for all responses. I own one Everse 8 already, but its not quite clear enough to my ears in my 6 member rock band. I love the Everse 8 though as a backup, its light, battery charged, and portable enough for band if I need to reduce weight, and great for streaming playlists at parties.
I purchased the qsc K8.2 and will try it out for a month or so, and return it and try something else if needed. I sold the dxr for $350 to guitar ctr, to offset cost of new qsc. Although GC says speaker checked out fine, I’m leery now of used equipment.

Re: Yamaha DXR10 MKII and NS3 73
I've had several chances to use a CP8 as a stage monitor. That thing gets loud! And it has a very full sound for its size. I bet a larger version sounds even better. Compared to the QSC K12 they also had, the CP was actually far preferable to me however I don't know what EQ settings the 12 was set to. It just sounded super muffled in comparison to the CP. Obviously, comparing these 2 lines with the same size speaker would be far more helpful...

Re: Yamaha DXR10 MKII and NS3 73
Good to hear. I tested the k8.2 it was great. The cp8 is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I will also be able to test it in a few days at an outdoor venue with my 6 piece rock band.
The k8.2 was not a good test at my last gig I believe due to the guitarist too overbearing beside me, which was annoying even though I asked him to tone down. He wears one in ear, on my side so half out of touch imo.
Anyway, I need clean, crisp representation of all my sounds, and spend time and details dialing them in at home. The 8 seemed to perform very well, very quiet speaker. Powers up slower than a yammy, but excellent piece, as I currently only use one. A case came with the 8.2, and as I read somewhere, it was too tight and destined for zip fail. This was from guitar center. Apparently sweetwater has proper case for it.
EQ’d my Everse 8 last night, its blasting, still great speaker but doesn’t have that crisp punch these others do, (dxr and 8.2). For me its gonna be either the 8.2 or cp8

Hi-
Let us know what you decide. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the CP8 on the default setting. I will just add as well that the Spacestation sounds good on most things if it is properly positioned, but will not cut it for acoustic piano at all. I had one and sold it pretty quickly.
