NS4 OLED Display suddenly gone dark

Post by Junior Lafayette »

Hi, first post here.

I purchased my Nord Stage 4 HA73 new in the Fall of 2024, and until last week things have been going well. I was at a gig, set up and had the NS4 powered on, when I noticed at some point that the OLED display (for the Program section) was black. That's not usually the case, it's always showing what program / presets are currently in use. When flipping through programs with the program knob, the Synth OLED display turned on whenever a synth patch was activated.

I decided to try a classic off/on power reboot, and I was surprised that the NS4 didn't react at all, no lights went on whatsoever when I pushed in the power button. I tried using a different outlet, different class compliant power cable, gently removing the fuse and putting it back in... No response whatsoever from the NS4. Needless to say, I was stressed

However, when I waited 15 seconds with the power button left pushed in, all the usual LED lights (except for the Program OLED display) came on, and I was luckily able to play the gig with just a piano sound.

I've come to the conclusion that only the main Program-Section OLED display is faulty, as I'm still able to select patches with the program knob and I can hear all the patches. The 15-second wait upon powering up must be the "loading screen" that only shows up on the center OLED display. Out of caution, I've just backed up the entire NS4 in the Nord Sound Manager, and I've updated the NS4's OS to v1.46. I'm going to try a factory reset now.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there anything else to do other than contact Nord? Thanks for reading!

Hi,

this could be maybe a loose connection cable inside the NS4.
You can try to open the NS4 and check the Connection cable from the Motherboard to the control unit.

Good Luck :)

Hi, thanks for your response! I've decided to send it in for repairs as it was still under warranty. It's been 2 weeks and I've had to revert back to playing my NS2, which I luckily hadn't sold yet.

Hello, this seems to be a common issue then because I just switched on my Nord stage 3 Compact yesterday and I have almost exactly the same issue but in my case it's the screen on the synth section that's gone almost completely black. Do you have any advice on how I could try to fix this myself ? Should I try to check for loose connections too for that screen ?

If I need to replace the screen entirely is that something I can do myself? I'm a beginner and I don't have any knowledge in electronics or whatsoever... (and I don't have a soldering iron if required...)
