Which Nord and should I replace

Post by Bigalrussell+ »

Hi I’m new to Nord. I have a Yamaha P515 digital piano. Nice but should I replace it with a Nord and if so which one? Should I keep it and get a Nord as well but maybe a smaller one. I’m just starting out with home recording and have written a musical so I’d need something to play in the band when we actually produce the show. Sorry this is a bit vague. Money isn’t no object but I don’t want to duplicate if I don’t have to

Welcome! There's another thread here where someone is wrestling with a similar situation.

The P515 has a nice weighted action so I'd want to keep it, and put it under a NS4 Compact on a two-tier stand. Just connect via midi (all sounds produced from the NS4) and you'll have an ideal setup.

You'll be able to do much more with the piano sounds on the NS4 than you'd ever be able to do on the P515, so not duplicative. Organ, synth, etc get played on the NS4C keybed.

You'll find quite a crowd here that thinks this is an ideal setup, including myself.
I think I have gear issues ....

What do you anticipate needing in terms of patches/sounds for the musical? Is this a Broadway-style production where keys needs to cover various auxiliary orchestral sounds frequently, or are you more in need of pianos/EPs/organs/occasional synth?

Adding to previous post by Mighty Motif Max, I also think you should consider if what you have composed could be played on a Nord or not, first of all.

For example, orchestral sounds are not what the Nord do best, in that case a Yamaha/Korg workstation would be a batter fit (and for piano you ould keep your P515). You may even consider to use Virtual Instruments live too.. so it is quite difficult to give you any meaningful advice if you are not (much) more detailed about your actual needs.
