Is a PA right for my music room?

Post by OCReggaeKeys »

Hi! My music room currently has 3 stacked keyboards into a small mixer, guitar and amp, e-drums plugged into computer…plugged into studio monitors, a bass into an amp…got a lap steel and some pedal boards and some mics I’d like to hook up.

Lots of stuff. Not a lot of space. I’m wondering if I should look into getting a PA system and just have everything plugged into that so I can get behind the instrument and just instantly jam without worrying about what cables and power strips and pedal boards are being used.

At first I was steered away from PA speakers. I was told it was overkill for a small room and that studio monitors would sound better. But basically, I want to have the mixer and PA for utility more than for the volume. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for your replies!

A "PA" is a mixer + powered PA speakers for live performances in larger spaces.

For small spaces, you want the mixer but studio monitors or open-back headphones.

PA speakers are designed to sound best at a distance, and not up close.
I think I have gear issues ....

A small PA speaker sounds good in a small space, just turn it down. Especially with e-drums/mics, which will be too much for studio monitors. You only need one speaker on a stand. Plus you will be good for small live gigs!
New EV ZLX-8P-G2 at $500 has a digital mixer/Bluetooth/App control. Turbosound iP300 is under $400 with 120 degree throw!
Traditional speakers with no Bluetooth or App: QSC CP8 or Yamaha DBR10 at $400.
Best battery speakers with internal battery but more money: EV Everse 8 or Bose S1 Pro Plus. I have all these speakers if you want more info. I'm not a dealer.

Hello I am looking at yamaha dbr 10. Do you think it is suitable for studio use as well as gigs?
