NL2, new PCMCIA card not reading/writing

Post by sytsew »

Hi,

I recently bought a new PCMCIA card for my old NL 2, but I can't get it to read or write.
  • The original Nord PCMCIA card still reads & writes correctly, after I replaced the battery. So the NL2 should be fine itself.
  • The write protection lock on the card is off. It appears to format (it's blinking "For", hit Store, blinking stops) but no preset is saved.
  • The card is an SRAM 1Mb 8-bit, bought from Memorix, said to be the original supplier for Nord, though by now PCMCIA cards have become so hard to get by that I suspect the old stock ran out and other types are relabled. Before ordering I specifically asked about the 8/16bit issue (cards before 2017 could automatically switch, now no longer) but Nord never specified if the card actually requires 8 or 16 as it didn't matter back then. Memorix answered that the 8 bit should work, also because previous customers hadn't reported issues. Indeed in other forum threads cards are referred working that have 8 bit, as well as 16 bit. However, this forum thread viewtopic.php?t=19774 suggests it might have to be 16bit. So this issue is in fact unclear.
Memorix kindly offered to return the card of not working, but first I'd like to exhaust the trials. Anyone an idea what else I could try?

I was going to exchange the EEPROM chip for a newer firmware version after doing backups of the sounds - could a firmware update affect the card reading issue? I suspect not, but..
