Loading sounds without the USB jack
I have an Electro 3 that has an issue where the USB receptacle is dead. I have already replaced it-still no love. Does anyone know if it's possible to upload sounds via MIDI or SYSEX? I don't want to buy a new mainboard. TIA!
½ century of live performance and repair, bitching about it all the way.

Re: Loading sounds without the USB jack
Pretty sure there isn't any other method of managing sounds.
You shouldn't need a new main board, just a competent service tech that can replace the few USB interface components or worse case the I/O chip that handles the USB I/O.
I already personally did a board level repair on my NS3 leslie speed switch circuit that died (the shipping cost more than the parts and was still less than $15 components+shipping)

It has to be said - it's time for a new Nord. Once your electronics start burning out, you might as well save the money for a new one.

Re: Loading sounds without the USB jack
so we should just scrap a $1500-4500 keyboard rather than spend what is likely less than $10 in parts and an hour of tech time?

Re: Loading sounds without the USB jack
A used, working Electro 3 goes for $1700 on Reverb, so I would suggest it's worth it to take it to a tech. The first $150 or so is a sunk cost, but maybe it can be repaired (e.g. broken contact or similar) without a new motherboard. That assumes there's a tech in your neck of the woods, otherwise shipping is involved.
However, it should be noted that used motherboards are scarce, so you may be stuck if it does need a new one.
I think I have gear issues ....

That's a very optimistic scenario. Is anything less than $10 anymore? And only an hour of tech time...assuming you find a tech who can even get the case open in an hour. I hope you live near a major metro area.
Let us know how it works out.

Re: Loading sounds without the USB jack
Yes the most likely parts that would need to be replaced are less then $10. It takes about 5 minutes to open a stage 3, so can't imagine the electro would take any longer.
Harder problem is finding a tech that can actually do board level service work, but it shouldn't take longer than an hour for anybody that knows what they are doing. There are sufficient schematics floating around to identify the relevant circuits as there is a lot of commonality between the various Nord Keyboards with respect to physical input/output sections (control pedals, USB port, etc).
The parts I needed to fix my NS3 cost me more in shipping ($8 or so) than the chips did. $.31 cents to be exact. Even the DSP chips for the NS3 are only $32/ea. ( haven't attempted that specific repair yet, but to replace all 5 DSP chips would be less than $160.

Don't forget tax and shipping
>It takes about 5 minutes to open a stage 3, so can't imagine the electro would take any longer.<
What I meant was when you finally find your "guy," he's going to need to take it apart, get his bearings, get everything pulled out and laid out and out of the way, decide on what needs to be done, get his tester hooked up, etc etc....that will all be in the first billable hour. Then comes the actual repair, which will no doubt require soldering, not to mention parts which he may not have, so now he has to put your board back together while he waits for those to come in, then take it apart again when they do come in and set up for the soldering, more testing, more re-assembly, etc.
And of course there may also be time taken for research, googling, calling Nord (he will only try that once)...I dunno, it sounds like about 3-4 hours of billed time plus parts which vendors always double the full price for, including shipping. If you get out of this with a working board for under $350 that would be grand.
Good luck, and keep us posted.
