Time for an update. In 2020, I retired the SL 990 and got a Fatar Studiologic SL73, thinking I would retain the former for larger gigs where the extra octave of piano keys was required. In practice, I've never done this and managed to use clever use of the octave shift buttons to work around this. So I'm selling the SL 990 to a mate of mine who's setting up a new recording studio.Ritchie333 wrote:How long have you got?
.... which brings me onto my current rig:
2011 - Nord Stage 2
2012 - Fatar Studiologic SL 990 (replacing the ProKeys which I sold in 2018)

Re: Your Lifetime Of Keyboards
My collection is quite interesting because my dad plays a lot of keyboards in 80s&90s China. The list in chronological order.
2001 and before:
Unknown Soviet synth
Yema YM-8501 (I think it's the first mass-produced electronic organs in China)
Yamaha PS35
Yamaha PSR410 (Super expensive, worth 3000~4000 CNY in 1993, the avg monthly income at that time is around 200)
Yamaha PSR-GX76
In the 1990s, Yamaha dominated the Chinese keyboard market, and the most of keyboard we can purchase is more like an arranger because many bands are one-man band.
2007 - Yamaha PSR-S500 (My first keyboard, started playing the keyboard when I was 6)
2011 - Korg Kronos, Yamaha Motif XF (Still very popular, these two keyboards basically defined the sound of Chinese pop music in 2010s)
2013 - Nord Stage EX 76 (First time traveled to US, my parents bought a used nord keyboard, so its my first nord)
2014 - Roland Jupiter 50 (Still love it, played a lot of 90s pop and city pop in my high school band)
2017 - Nord Stage 3 Compact (A huge upgrade from EX, but I don't have many chances to use it because it's my dad's main keyboard)
After 2018 (Moved to Canada for study (not studying music, but software engineering, lol)):
Roland Fantom 8 (Incredible keybed, the synth sound is great but the aftertouch is unusable for weighted keys, sold it for nord stage 4)
Yamaha MODX 6 (The MODX is fully compatible with MOTIF XF is a huge plus to me, and the sample for acoustic instruments are way better than fantom)
Hydrasynth (The polyphonic aftertouch is so good)
Nord Stage 4 88 (My main keyboard, it does everything I need except sequencer and looper)
Roland Jupiter Xm (Always connected to nord so I can play some classic Roland patches, and it's very portable)

Re: Your Lifetime Of Keyboards
I'm a classically trained piano player and always had an upright piano within reach: Seiler, Weiß etc. No grand ever. But a 70s harpsichord as well.
During studies, no keys at hand, so I played recorder, guitar etc.
In 2008, I decided to get back to the piano - but only for accompanying singers, mostly popular style. As I came from the piano, a single AP sound seemed to be enough:
> Yamaha CP33 (2008)
Interestingly, quite soon EP sounds got more important to me than AP ones. Even if I only had 3 and a half different sounds in that tool.
For playing around with sounds at home, a MIDI controller seemed to be the next thing I needed. Unfortunately, I wasn't very well advised and got something a little different:
> NI Kontrol S61 mk2 (2019)
which isn't very useful for MIDI controlling - only for controlling NI Komplete. An absolutely annoying world of presets as I learned quite quickly.
Next was something to take with me that could be played stand-alone and meet the basic needs:
> Yamaha reface CP (2019)
which is really nice inside a travelling bag but not so nice to be played when performing. Great EP sounds, though. No need for the hidden bonus AP sound. A small Roland MobileCube was enough for the moment to amplify.
Then I got keyboardist in a big band. Needed organ sounds and some synths. Plus a lot more capacity to tweak (EP) sounds:
> Nord Stage 3 Compact (2020)
Great thing, a little costly, but worth the invest. Unfortunately, the purchase resulted in a second investment:
> 2x QSC K8.2 as monitors. Yamaha Stagepas 400 were ridiculously useless for that.
All this should have left me a happy owner of everything you need. Apart from a small disappointment with the CP33 as a weighted external controller for the Nord:
> a used Kawai VPC1 needed to join the club (2022)
Great weighted action. Unfortunately too bulky to haul around.
As the reface CP wasn't that good to take to school or elsewhere, I got another mobile solution:
> Casio CT-S1 (2023)
Great to just hack a rhythm into the keys.
And I sold the acoustic piano. And wanted to learn more about creating EP sounds. And a few more desires:
> Viscount Legend '70s (2024)
which sometimes sounds better than my NS3 sounds. Unfortunately some other times, it has a little hiss that I can't get rid of - depending on the power provided. Happens only on stage. At home, it's a nice weighted practicing board as well.
So, within a dozen years, quite a collection came together. Of course, none of those keyboards already had to go. At the moment, the Viscount and the Nord are in a battle around the better sounds for the big band. And bring me to always do another step forwards. The rest sits around waiting for its opportunity.
Which in the end is a collection of different mimicking sound generators - nothing original for the moment, nothing original to be planned. Sounds like I'm living in a digital world.
