Need Nord Electro 2 Errors/Issue Help

Post by LucasRenew »

This is a bit of a hail mary but I work in eWaste and someone recycled a Nord Electro 2 that I'm trying to get up and running again. By default the unit boots up with the display showing "EL" before quickly swapping to "L" and everything on the keyboard appears to be unresponsive after that. I've been trying for a couple days to see if I can find a solution to make this thing work again and nothing I've tried works. I was hoping to simply flash the latest firmware to the unit and have that fix it, however I've not been able to successfully flash a new firmware. Boot into flash mode (by holding program 1 and 5) show "Ud" followed by "2.1" (I assume the current firmware number?) then saying "rd" which I believe is the intended actions when entering this mode. However upon trying to flash the unit with firmware 3.0.4 using a midi to USB adapter I have one of 2 different outcomes (I've tested using Windows 11, 10, XP 64-bit, XP 32-bit, and Mac OS 10.5 and the outcomes are the same on all), either the unit fails to recognize the keyboard at all saying "no synth found" (this happens on some USB ports), and the other outcome is the software says "Wrong Synth Connected" and the keyboard errors with error code "E.0 Recv SysEx error (overflow or other low level error)" (for some reason this one seems to happen less often, not always occurring even when using the same USB ports after unplugging and replunging the cable, but I managed to get this error to appear on all previously listed OSes). Trying to boot the keyboard into its self test mode (by holding program 1, 3, and 5) simply shows the error code "E.r"

If anyone has any knowledge that could help me with these issues I'd appreciate it. I'm currently trying to get my hands on another midi to USB cable in the case that a new cable will allow an update to occur, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to get my hands on another one.

There is a service manual floating around online- if Nord hasn't taken it down. Not a Nord expert, but if it's not power supply related, it sounds like either someone tried to update it and "bricked" the main PCB, or a bad main pcb. There's a guy on EBay that sell the main board.Love my E2.

I had emailed Nord themselves and they told me it is likely a CPU or RAM issue. I sent the schematics to a local tech of mine with the board and asked him if he could potentially fix the issue, but I'm not particularly hopeful since it seemed at first glance like it isn't actually worth it. But if it doesn't get fixed I'll sell it for parts so someone else can get good use out of it, especially since it is in great physical condition.
