Problems connecting 3P

Post by furiousmother »

Hello, new forum member here!

Been playing with my 3P for a while and finally wanted to update the firmware and import some banks, but have run into a brick wall with the Nord drum manager. I've seen a few people with the same issue on the forum but no solutions have worked for me and I was wondering if anyone with has any ideas and can help me out before I have to bring it in somewhere to get fixed (Nord customer service recommendation)

Details:
- Running Windows 10
- Midi sends to and from external gear and midi interfaces totally fine
- When loading the update tool and drum manager, the connection fails every time. Message: "No reply from drum. Please check midi setup."
- Tried using USB midi cable (I've seen these can be cheap and not work), but also have tried running it through midi on my focusrite interface, Elektron gear, Cirklon sequencer, and Arturia keystep 37. So "quality" of the connection is absolutely not the issue. All of these send and receive midi from the 3P totally fine
- Midi interfaces/devices show up in the setup window
- Write protect in global settings is off
- Midi settings have been set to default with global at ch.10
- Clavia and all nord related software has been updated
- Tested on my laptop running Windows 10 as well, so it is not my PC

Am I just completely out of luck? Happy to provide any other details and if anyone has any tips or suggestions to try, anything is welcome. Thank you!

Hi furiousmother, welcome to the forum!

That's frustrating indeed,

A couple of tips/suggestions, you possibly knew already, but just to be sure:
-Press SHIFT and DRUM KIT SELECT while powering the 3p up to start it in Update Ready Mode,
-try to avoid USB hubs in between your audio/MIDI interface and your PC, preferably USB ports on the motherboard (rear of the PC)
-because the update utility wants to do a handshake with the 3p both MIDI IN and OUT should be connected, that's connecting OUT of your interface to the IN of the 3p, and the OUT of the 3p to IN of the interface,
-In the update utility make sure to select the correct MIDI interface and ports for both connections
-being able to send and receive MIDI notes does not guarantee that the interface can also be used for firmware updates, it is indeed a good idea to try a couple as you did.

Good luck!
Cheers,
Albert
