Money for Nothing (using Sample Editor)
The intro Money for Nothing is an epic synth exhibition, that we all know and love. By my count it has at least 6 or 7 distinct synth sounds, that come and go at various times, behind Sting's voice.
I have a single Stage 3 88. It can only do 2 synth voices at a time.
I'm wondering if it is viable to use Sample Editor to create a SINGLE sample, with all 6 or 7 subsamples, mapped across the 88 keys. You'd simply learn when to trigger the various sounds, which all have their own lengths.
Before I attempt this project, with a bunch of VST's that I have on my Mac, or the Nord Synth itself, I'm I missing anything?
Is there any reason why this isn't possible? It seems to me that if you can map a whole drum kit on various Nord keys, why can't you simply do the same with a bunch of synth sounds, triggered by different keys.
I'm looking for guidance from all you sample gurus.
With thanks!!

Re: Money for Nothing (using Sample Editor)
Im in the same boat - once you are past the opening I think it just needs a digital synth (was originally done on a DX-7) and an organ (typical warm dire straights organ) - let me know how you work out - I may try to program this on my stage 3 this week

Re: Money for Nothing (using Sample Editor)
Being that it's a DX7 heavy song, most of the sounds might already have DX7 (or Dexed) programs available on the internet. One, possible the most important one is already in both *.nsmp format, and as a raw sample source on this forum.
Splitting inside of an *.nsmp is tried and tested i.e. numerous samples on Uptown Funk for example. The things you need to be acutely aware of are A: hthe sounds have to be correctly level matched in the *nsmp. B: any velocity, filter, envelope or FX will apply to the whole section. What you export (from NSE) is what you get.

Thanks Elias. I have the Arturia DX7 virtual synth. I agree that the song is heavy in FM type sounds.

Re: Money for Nothing (using Sample Editor)
So, finally, I have something to contribute.
There are 2 program: one for the synth intro and one for the song after Knopfler guitar starts.
1) the cool synth intro is about 45 seconds long. It is a call-response thing, with Sting's vocals. Each time Sting finishes a couplet, there is a chord change. I approached it with a split having my left hand do the pads and arpeggio, all of which I did with samples, so they are triggered with single keys. The right hand is dedicated to the Moog-like lead line (sounds like a French Horn), which is Gm pentatonic noodling.
I have a Stage 3-88, so the key assignments reflect that.
Left hand is used to trigger these samples.
C1 is the drone on G (it's the Shine On drone from another user)
-Sting sings-
D1 and Eb1 are hit at the same time. There are the arpeggio and the Gm chord pad.
-Sting sings-
Gb1 is the Gm7/Ab chord pad
-Sting sings-
A1 is the Ebmaj7 chord pad
-Sting sings-
Return to Eb1 Gm).
-Drummer starts-
B1 is the first glissando pad
C2 is the second glissando pad.
Right hand is used to do the lead line.
2) is after the song starts. I call is Zap-Organ
The left hand is used for that metallic DX7 stuff, that was previously uploaded on this forum.
The right hand is used for the Hammond.
I owe a debt of gratitude to other users on this forum for the Shine On, the Arpeggio, and the Metallic DX7 bit. As they say, I stood on the shoulders of giants.
Enjoy

I tried to upload 2 programs and 2 samples to my post. It says that they're not downloaded yet.

Re: Money for Nothing (using Sample Editor)
Nothing - it worked and they are available in your previous post as well as in your last one now. Not sure why it says that they are not downloaded yet.
Thanks for providing this, that's a great piece of work and I can't wait trying it out on my NS3

Re: Money for Nothing (using Sample Editor)
I think it was just that I didn't know the difference between upload and download. Duh.
Good thing I have my looks!
