Headphone Amplifier + Nord Grand
Okay, so I have a question. I’ve decided to get myself some Beyerdynamic DT1770 Pros. I want to know what sub £200 amp would be best for these headphones? I want to use them with a Nord Grand digital piano, Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 3rd Gen Audio Interface, and also with an iPad Pro for Hi-Res Lossless music listening. Can anyone give me any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
not sure what you are looking for exactly, is it a headphone amp to which you can connect the Nord Grand, the Scarlet 2i2 and the iPad Pro at the same time, and if so how will you connect the iPad (since the other two are clear)?

Re: Headphone Amplifier + Nord Grand
Thanks for the response. As the headphones I’m looking at are 250ohm, they obviously need an amp of some description. What I’m looking for is something that enables me to use the headphones with the Nord Grand (when playing solo when it isn’t connected to anything else); something that enables me to use the headphones to listen to Hi-Res Lossless audio in Apple Music via my iPad Pro; and something that enables me to use the headphones to record the Nord into Logic on my iPad, via a Scarlet 2i2 Interface. The budget for the amp is £200.

Re: Headphone Amplifier + Nord Grand
OK - did you try to connect the headphones directly without a headphone amp?
I am also using a 250 Ohm DT770 Pro and it works just fine with my two Nord Stage 3 as well as with my audio interfaces (Motu and M-Audio) without using a headphone amp, there are no problems, the sound and sound level is good. I haven't tried yet to connect it to the headphone output of my iPad Pro though.
It would be worth checking first if they are ok for you without using a headphone amp I think, otherwise a small mixer between your devices and the headphones like the Rolls MX 28 should do the job as well.
Edit: the Topping DX1 seems to have a good quality at a reasonable price if you are not satisfied with the direct connection of the headphones to your devices

Re: Headphone Amplifier + Nord Grand
I haven’t actually bought the headphones yet, so can’t try them. If I remember correctly from another thread, someone said 250ohm headphones were okay to use with the Stage, but not the Grand. I’ve also been reading somewhere that the Focusrite 2i2 is capable of powering headphones up to 200ohm, with 250ohm headphones only appearing slightly quieter. I might try that first and see what the results are like before getting into other amps. I’m currently using the Scarlett Studio HP60 MK3’s that came with my 2i2. They’re…okay. I had a set of AirPods Max that broke - but when they worked, they made playing the piano feel like an out of body experience. The HP60’s are quite a downgrade from them; the piano definitely sounds a lot hollower with them, hence why I’m looking for a nice set of well-made headphones for the job. I’d go open-back if my environment wasn’t so noisy, but sadly it is. Thanks a lot for your replies.

Re: Headphone Amplifier + Nord Grand
Hi again,
if you haven’t yet bought the DT770 Pro and are worried about the 250 Ohm impedance, why don’t you consider buying the 32 Ohm version of the DT770 Pro then? That should work flawlessly without any additional amp I think

The 32 Ohm version is what I use and they sound great. I actually bought them for my previous keyboard because the output was low so on two keyboard now that 32 Ohm version have worked fantastic. I've used them plugged into my audio interface and directly to my NS3.
I think the OP said he's used a Focusrite audio interface what I've read they are know for low headphone output.

Re: Headphone Amplifier + Nord Grand
There is no such thing as a Beyerdynamic DT1770 pro with less than 250 Ohm. The DT770 pro with three versions is something different. I was absolutely fine with the DT770 pro, but expectations may vary.
Stage 3 Compact (Rev.B 2.1 - OS 2.60) - Kawai VPC1 / Yamaha CP33 - Hall of Fame & NeoVent2 - Behringer Flow-8 - K&M stands 18820+18811 / 18953+18952 - Samsung tablet with MobileSheetsPro & AirTurn Duo200 - QSC K8.2s / Fischer InEars

Re: Headphone Amplifier + Nord Grand
I was going to get the 32ohm DT770’s, but given how much of an improvement the DT1770’s have been reported to be by all who’ve tried both, I’ve gone for them.Schorsch wrote:Hi again,
