Sending Midi signals to Ableton

Post by Mark100 »

Hi guys, new to this forum!
I have a question regarding the nord stage 2 and couldn't find a straight answer on the internet.
This coverband I play keys in put me in charge of the click track during live perfomances, I figured I'd use Ableton Live for the click and use scenes there to control the songs and their BPM's. My plan was to use the big "Program Patch Change" knob on my NS2 which I use to change the sounds, to link to changing scenes in Ableton and thereby changing the click track. This way I wouldn't have to bring a separate MIDI controller for just controlling the click track.
As I tried this I found out that this big knob shows up in Ableton as "Pitch Bend" Therefore it seems I can't use it to change the scenes in Ableton. I use the Organ, Piano, Synth and Effects section on my NS2 so I don't have any spare knobs that i could assign it to.
Now I'm not sure if this is an Ableton or a Nord problem and if there is a way to change the MIDI Control list in my NS2. It might not even be possible at all, but if it is does anyone of you know or use this way? And if not might there be any other way to work around this problem without having to bring a separate midi controller.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Kind regards,
Mark

I dont't have a NS2 (but NS3). On NS3 you need to set MIDI system settings so that Nord sends out Program Change messages. So you should check this.
The "big knob" should not send Pitch Bend messages. I would say this by accident or an error in Ableton - just assuming ;-)

I think you can do it best by using the Extern section, it can send Program changes and you can also assign its knob to that function, if you want to also send consecutive PCs to Ableton while staying on the same NS23 program (check NS2 manual and this The Nord Stage MIDI Tutorial )
