My apologies, my profile was out of date.

I am very much talking about a Nord Electro 6D as top keyboard with RD88 underneath (essentially as a midi controller)

In that case, why don't you just use a standard MIDI cable from the RD88 (which has a MIDI out) to the Electro? Works perfectly...

(I'm assuming now you want to play the Electro's sounds from the RD88 keys.)

I’ve tried this but can’t get the Nord sounds to be independent ie piano on the midi controller and synth on the Nord. Is this not possible?

You can do this using the EXT KEYBOARD TO LO function on the Electro 6. Please have a look into the user manual for the Electro 6, pages 16 and 17. You need to understand how KBD SPLIT controls the UP and LO zones. By setting EXT KEYBOARD TO LO the RD 88's keys will control the LO zone, while the Electro's keys control the UP zone. There you go...

(If necessary, you'll also need to make sure that the MIDI channels on the RD 88 and the E6 match. In principle, this should be working in the standard configuration, but I don't know whether and/or how you changed MIDI channels on either instrument.)

My problem is that I have External KBD To LO on, but with the sounds on the electro set to Upper only, the midi control still generates sound.

Settings wise the Nord is global channel 1 and extkb 16. The RD88 is set to channel 16.

I’ve now got it working (switched the 1 and 16 round on the Nord). But the sustain pedal doesn’t work for anything played on the rd88 (with sustain pedal in the Nord)..

You need to assign the sustain pedal to the LO Zone on the Electro. See the manual, p. 14 (and 26, if necessary). Another solution (which I prefer in my setup) is to have two sustain pedals, one for the external keyboard and one for the Electro...
