Sustain a sound while playing another without splits

Post by Romeo1073 »

Hi everyone! First post here. :)
I was wondering:
On my stage 3 it's very easy to play a chord on one panel, then switch to the other, without muting that chord,
And play something else on the other panel. Going back and forth as if they were 2 different keyboards.
Where the keybed doesn't trigger a panel that isn't selected, but selecting another panel doesn't mute the former, as long as the sustain pedal is down or the hold is down on the synth section.

Is there a way to do that on the stage 4, now that the panel format is gone? Or is it possible only splitting the keyboard?
And is it possible on the wave 2?

I've never heard anyone talking about this. But it's an excellent way to build drones, and ambient soundscapes. With the full range of the keyboard. And sounds seamlessly going in and out of keyboard control.

Cheers!

That's called the "patch remain" feature. I can't answer your question, other than to say that the NE2 didn't have it but I'm delighted to find that the NE5 does, even when switching between organ and piano. However, any changes to FX in the new patch apply to sounds in the old patch.

In the case of the NS, it's complicated by the architecture, and there might be limitations.

What you do on the NS3 probably "just works" due to the architecture. You're not really using a "patch remain" feature so much as switching between two sound engines. (That is, this would work if you were using a MIDI master keyboard with two other synths, and switching between them, such as by changing MIDI channel. Note that depending on how clever the master keyboard is, the sustain pedal response can seem goofy.)

For drones & such, would you just keep the sustain pedal down, and not replay the ringing notes, unless you wanted to replace particular voices? Could get complicated! But yeah, interesting ... I've never tried it more than "one deep." Trying it now, the NE5 patch-remain only works once. If I play and hold a note, change patch, play and hold another note, and change patch again, the first note drops out.

I'll be interested to hear what the NS gurus have to say about this.
