NS4 Possible Bug - No Single Layer Organ Preset Option

Post by SuperStage »

When I click ORGAN LAYER A or B and click SHIFT + ORGAN PRESET, it does not allow the same option for SINGLE LAYER PRESET that the PIANO and SYNTH sections provide. Is this by design or a bug?

It might be "by design" given that the effects are applied to both layers. If that's the case, all Nord organ presets will be dual-layer. Does NSM include information for the presets if they are layered?

You can save layerd organ presets - yes.
But if the other slot is inactive, it is not saved.
It is not possible to replace one of the organ slots with a preset, because you can't load single layer organ presets...

In my opinion the non-active organ layer should be saved in the organ settings as well. Because switching back and forth is kind of important there!

I just tried and confirmed that yes you can save a dual layer presets and you rightly pointed out that the effects are applied to both layers, so not allowing single slot presets is likely by design.

The first organ preset I posted is a dual layer preset. nord-stage-4-programs-ns4p-files-f33/ns ... 23897.html

Moving forward, I will save all my organ presets as dual layer and will go back and edit the existing presets to be dual layer as well, which Nord should have done in the first place.

If Clavia has single-layer organ presets, maybe the absence of the option is a bug and not by design...perhaps to not automatically wipe out settings you have on another layer? I'm not sure what that means having effects assigned to both; maybe worth setting up a layer with effects and see how it's affected when a single-layer preset is added to the other.

As I always run my NS4 in DUAL KB/AUX KB mode, my initial idea was to create presets for both upper and lower manual and load them separately as single layer presets (i.e. Jazz Organ Upper, Jazz Organ Lower, Jazz Organ LH Bass etc.). I tried saving and loading organ presets with both single layer and dual layer with effects and it always loads the preset with effects and overwrites the drawbar settings for both banks. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it also saves the settings for AUX KB and Organ Outputs, so my B3 presets are routed to my vent via OUTPUT 3 and my vox/farfisa/pipe organs are routed to the main outputs 1 + 2. I am now creating all my presets as dual layer with effects, which is proving to be a easy and fast job.

I am pretty sure, that the absence of single layer organ presets is a design choice and not a but. Because they actively didn't draw the SHIFT button line under all of the layer preset categories, just under PIANO and SYNTH.

I find that understandable, because having one effect path for these two layers makes sense musically. That's why they don't come as single layer presets. You could still implement it, but I think, they won't because the NS4 layout is already out there.

However in my opinion it is maybe not a bug, but a missing feature, that a passive organ layer is not saved. SuperStage, you say you are going to save both layers, always: That means, after calling up the preset, you have to de-activate one of the presets, if you don't want a layered organ, which is definitely strange.
Since the PRESET II button of the Stage 2 and Stage 3 is missing (which is in general, for me, totally fine), the saving of an inactive layer is kind of a must...

This is as intended by design. From page 40 of the user manual:
« iOrgan presets are always loaded for the entire Organ Section, since the Organ A and B layers share the same effects chain.»

I just tested this and confirmed that both A + B drawbar settings will only be saved as an organ preset if they are on the same layer and both turned on. (Inactive layer is not saved)

Layer 1 Organ A ON, Organ B OFF - Only organ A saved as organ preset
Layer 1 Organ A ON, Organ B ON - Both A + B organs saved as an organ preset
Layer 1 Organ A ON, Layer 2 Organ B ON - Only organ A saved as an organ preset
Layer 1 Organ A ON SPLIT Organ B ON - Both organs A + B saved as an organ preset (split is not saved!)
Lawyer 1 Organ A ON AUX KB Organ B On - Both organs A + B saved as an organ preset (AUX KB is not saved)

There are definitely some missing features here.

According to the Manual P40 "Organ presets are always loaded for the entire Organ Section, since the Organ A and B layers share the same effects chain" so logically, would it not makes sense that both ORGAN A + B should saved as a preset instead of only the Active Part in the Active Layer?

about that: Also SYNTH splits are not saved. Which is understandable, because calling up a SYNTH preset (or in your case an ORGAN preset) would crash with already existing split points.

totally agree. IMO this is something that would have to be fixed in the future.
