NS4 feature request: add a layer by long press on/off

Post by Graspieper »

Hi all,

On the NS4, of you shortly press the on/off button of a inactive layer, this layer becomes active, and the other layer(s) of that section are turned off.
This is a bit annoying...

Suppose you have two out of three synth layers active, and you want to add the third, then you must press all three on/off buttons at once

Suggestion:
Make long pressing an on/off button add that layer, just like long pressing turns it off... (=Symmetrical behaviour)

Hi

I totally agree, and I talked about it in this post :
nord-stage-forum-f3/nord-stage-4-new-on ... 23737.html

I like your suggestion

Are you saying that when you push one of the Synth On/Off buttons below the ABC Faders that it turns off the other synths?

If that is the case, then that is a bug. Those On/Off buttons should function completely independently.

E.g. layer 1 and 2 are on, layer 3 is off.
If you press on/off for 1 or 2, that layer gets the focus.
If you press on/off for 3, 3 goes on, and 1 and 2 are turned off.

To turn off a part, one must long press on/off for that part.
As such, doing the same to enable a part and leave the rest as is, long pressing would make sense

No what makes sense is when you press an on/off button it only affects the layer it’s assigned to. Otherwise what is the point of independent on/off buttons.

Compensating for a bug by adding long/short press of a basic toggle button just makes every needlessly more complicated.

Cgrafx, don't forget that pressing the on/off button sets focus to that layer for the effects..
I stick with my proposal, based on my hands on experience with my NS4 :)

Why can't the buttons work independently of each other with short presses only for off and on? This way any combination of setups can be selected quickly on the fly and perhaps having a long press change the focus of the effects?

I don't own a NS4, but if I'm not wrong, doesn't touching the fader also set focus?

So if you need to adjust something on a specific synth layer you can just push the relevant fader up or down slightly. That makes way more sense than having convoluted long short button press (which I can guarantee will not do what you expect it to do when your in the middle of a live set)

I still say this is a bug. The layers should be independent, and on/off buttons for a layer should never affect other layers.

It feels like it's trying to mimic the old Slot A/B behaviour, where clicking B would select B instead of A, unless you press them both together. This is how it works with the slots on the NS4... it's useful if eg you want to switch from string sample to brass sample. It doesn't take much getting used to, so I'm happy whichever method is adopted. Similarly with the long-press for off; it feels a bit pointless and I agree that the above suggestion of 'every switch is an independent toggle' would be easier - but it's a very short long-press, if that makes sense, so it's very usable.
I don't think this thread is really about changing focus - it's about adding / removing slots. I don't think touching the slider is a good way to set focus because you would often cause a sudden jump in the slot volume (until / if they use catch instead of jump on the faders). If I *only* wanted to change focus I'd just use the focus buttons on the effects section.

As posted on a similar thread, I wish there was a way to lock the slider levels together after creating a sound mix and then be able to move a slider for master volume to bring the combined and mixed sound in and out. Or having a level trim in the synth parameters to offset individual synth volumes. Then it then would be very easy to slide the 3 faders up and down in concert and your mix would not get lost.
