Need more volume from Synth/Samples section

Post by hammonitup »

Is there some way to get more volume from the Synth section relative to the other Piano and Organ sections of the Stage 3?

I'm using Nord Sample library samples such as Soul Horn Trio and other horns, turned up all the way, while other sections are dialed back -6 to -10db and they still aren't that loud in comparison.

Yes, i could adjust the Piano and Organ sections even lower, which would be ok if it were just one Preset, but i'm using Song mode with various Presets throughout the live set and it seems odd i'd have to go back and adjust all the other sounds lower from all those other presets just to get the Synth Horn samples to be loud enough.

I've checked the Volume Level Offset and it's at 0db. What i need is a boost for the sample or the Synth section. If the NS3 could assign the compressor to just one section that would work, but it is across all the Program sounds equally.

Is there some way to get those Synth samples boosted?!

This is curious, as most of us feel exactly the opposite: the synth section's level is considerably higher than piano and organ. As many other users, I too have many of my synth-focused Programs dialled a few dB lower than the others, so that the overall volume is roughly the same.

Anyway, to answer your question technically, no, other than the volume knobs there is no other way to lower the volume directly. Things get a bit more articulate when you look at the specifics of each setting. Drawbar registration dictates how loud the organ is going to be for example, but this is intrinsic to the instrument. Same thing for synth: cutting off certain frequencies with filters may result in overall lower or higher perceived volume.

Other things that come to mind:

1. Expression pedal associated with piano and organ. You'd have to go through each program though.

2. Re-sampling the samples with higher volume. You would have to go through each sample...

3. If your organ and piano programs have a lot of EQ or drive, that could affect the volume too.

But any way you want to tackle this, it's going to involve going through each setting, there's no "one knob" approach.

wondering where the volume get set per sample? for example, assuming all Nord Sample LIbrary samples are normalized, i'm guessing not all samples have the same impact or amplitude. is there any control for the relative volume of each sample?

I am not sure all the samples are normalized, so that's one first possible reason; the harmonic content of the sample/waveform also plays a role in the perceived volume, so it really depends case by case. Volume of each sample can only be adjusted when creating the .nsmp, working on its .wav source, not after.

As others said: It depends on each sample how it is percepted but here a few suggestions to try:
- activate Unison (1-3)
- activate Synth internal Drive
- add Drive in AMP Section
- play with EQ in AMP Section
- double Synth in both slots
- add overall compression
It depends on each sound/sample/program which feature is usable but each of them can make a difference.

Hello

Here 's a tip:
For percussive / short samples, you can enable the compressor, it helped me to gain the extra db I needed sometimes, with a loss of dynamics which was not disturbing in my context.

I have found that using the lp+hp filter can increase sample volume.

hello, I have had my ns3 for three months now......I have learned so much from a series on you tube from Mr. Keys.......Here is one of the sessions....Perhaps you might find this one, and others able to answer your question concerning volume.
Good Luck!
