How to setup midi for sustain, control, and rotary

Hello,

I have a two keyboard setup and want the pedals that are attached to my Nord to also work for my other board through midi. I do not want the sounds triggered. Could someone explain how to set this up for me?

I think Pablo might need to provide detail but I would think you set up your external section of your primary keyboard to send on Midi commands to the secondary keyboard. Not sure if incoming midi on primary keyboard automatically maps to outgoing on secondary though. If it doesn't, you would need external controller to send same cc setting to both keyboards each on a different channel. Also you second keyboard would need to be using came controller CC Midi settings as your Nord.

As I have stated on other threads I use a FCB1010 foot controller routed to a PC running software called Bome, that does all my midi mapping for me on both of my keyboards.

I can make the pedals work for both, but each keyboard triggers sounds on the other, so I just get a mix of both. I am using a Krome and Electro 4 HP.

It is possible to filter outgoing midi cc data from data stream, but it is not possible to filter note data. You are going to need to figure out a different way to do that.

From your description I am guessing that you have TWO midi lines connected between the two instruments, midi out on Nord connected to midi in on Korg and midi out on Korg connected to midi in on Nord. Is this correct? Why would you want to do this? What is your ultimate overall objective?

Resurrecting an old thread because I have the same problem. Here's my objective: I want to use one sustain pedal for two keyboards (one is a NS3, the other is a Yamaha Montage). I can accomplish this, but the nord sends note data as well, in other words, both keyboards play when I play the nord, which is NOT what I want. I want them to play independently, except for the sustain. Any advice would be appreciate.

Most sustain pedals are simple on/off switches. The keyboard senses when circuit is closed, and doesn't send MIDI note-off information until you release the pedal.

Other than the obvious solution of two sustain pedals, you could perhaps use a 1/4" TR cable splitter to create two outputs, one per keyboard. You may have to fiddle around a bit (e.g. pedal polarity setting, etc.) to make it all work, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't.

As long as you have them linked with MIDI cables this is not possible. You could filter out data such as sustain or other controllers, but you cannot filter out midi notes which means the keys you play (already mentioned by Pablo 5 years ago in the post right above yours). So - if it works - the splitter solution as proposed by cphollis seems to be the only one.

Only to exclude the simple, obvious cable: you cannot use an insert cable, because you need to have TS (tip and sleeve) polarity at each end.

Cordial EY 0,3 GPP elements should be okay.

I remember seeing a double sustain pedal that featured 2 cables and 2 switches. That should be fine, but I would not risk damaging two expensive instruments by connecting the sustain jacks to a single switch. Why? because the sustain jack carries 3V (yes I tested it) and if you mix NO and NC pedals or inverted polarities it might just not work, or worse, end up in tears.
I would rather buy an extra cheap pedal and keep the two very close (velcro, screws, glue, duct tape, mental power, whatever) so you can step on both at the same time if necessary.

Actually, there are a couple of ways to do this, since both the Yamaha and the Nord have settings that permit this.

Option 1: Plug sustain pedal into the Nord. Connect MIDI OUT of the Nord to MIDI IN of the Yamaha. Use the Nord's EXT function to send controllers (but not notes) to the second keyboard. As it says in the NS3 manual:

NON-KEYBOARD EXTERN SETUP
In addition to the regular keyboard zones, there is an extra option - selected the same way as regular keyboard zones - that doesn’t assign the Extern section to the internal keyboard at all, assigned by all KB ZONE LEDs being off for the Extern section. However, all other Extern features are still active, such as the Pitch Stick and the Value encoder. this is useful when you want to control external equipment with no need for MIDI keyboard messages.

The Nord sustain pedal will then affect both keyboards, but the Nord will only sound when you play the Nord's keys, and the Yamaha will only sound when you play the Yamaha's keys. (Note that you'll have to do this from within every Nord program that you want to have function this way.)

Option 2: Plug sustain pedal into the Yamaha. Connect MIDI OUT of the Yamaha to MIDI IN of the Nord. For reasons it would take too long to explain here, set the Nord's Global channel (and any other channel you want the Nord to receive anything on ) to some channel between 9 and 16. Using the Yamaha's "Zone Master" function (described at https://yamahasynth.com/learn/montage/z ... ng-montage ), set one of the first eight parts of your Yamaha Performance to transmit on the Nord's Global channel, but set that Yamaha part's key range outside the range of the Yamaha's playable keys (give it a playable range of, say, G8 to G8). The Yamaha's sustain pedal will then affect both keyboards, but again the Nord will only sound when you play the Nord's keys, and the Yamaha will only sound when you play the Yamaha's keys. (And again, you'll need to incorporate these settings into every Yamaha Performance where you want to have this function.)

This is the best answer. Use the simple "square" pedals. Keep the pedals in fixed into position right next to each other (velcro'd to a piece of wood or whatever). Use your foot to press them both down at the same time by pressing down in the middle. This also lets you sustain just one or the other if and when desired, by choosing to press the left or right pedals alone. And it will work all the time, with no special programming.

p.s. to Maxmannnn... since you have the NS3, this would have been better asked in that section. But for any Electro owner following this topic, Option #1 won't work, but #2 should. As would, of course, pressing the two pedals together!
