PA Speaker Questions - Help Please

Post by SynthzGuy »

Currently, I am "lugging around" a pair of Yamaha S115 IV non-powered speakers (15" woofer). These are dedicated to only my keyboard setup (not for vocals). Each speaker weighs 61 pounds! I dread each time I have to haul them because they are so heavy (but they do sound great). I will keep these speakers for my home studio use.

I would like to find a pair of "NON-POWERED" speakers that are much lighter with with 15"s or possible 10"s woofers (if sound quality is not sacrified).
I found these Behringers B215Xl: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ ... TAodPVO8Qg

These B215Xl Behringer PA speakers only weigh 39 pounds each! (hugh difference and would certainly help my back).
My question are: Has anyone tried these speakers using a Nord Stage 2 (playing Piano, Organ & Synth)? And how you would rate them? Or are there some better speakers that are lightweight that you recommend that would sound awesome with the NS2, please do. I typically gig for small parties & weddings (no large, outdoor gigs).

Thanks!

I just bought a RCF Art 312 active speaker, after recommendations from friends, that only weighs 40lbs. Sounds great with just one speaker, I wish I could afford a pair. Maybe in the future. (edit: the unpowered version of these is 35lbs.)

As far as unpowered, I've played on the active version of these JBLs and found they sound great. They are only 33lbs (unpowered).

From my experience, Behringer speakers don't sound that great...

Cee-

Thanks for the info. I will look into those too.

Anywhere between 10lbs to 20lbs less than my 61lbs (each) Yamaha S115 would make a huge difference when lifting those puppies up on their tripod stands (but at the same time, definetely don't want to sacrifice sound quality).

Also looking into these 2 different models of Peavey speakers:
1) Lot of great reviews for the PR15 (@42lbs each / 19lbs less than my Yamaha S115): http://www.peavey.com/assets/literature ... _13932.pdf

2) The new, PVx15 (@47lbs each / 14lbs less than my Yamaha S115):
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PVx15

Peavey has always made a pretty decent speaker. The old "Black Widow" 15's were one of the best ever.

Open to other suggestions, thanks!

Qsc k10 are great if a tad on the heavy side. Back panel is the most versatile I have seen. FYI , also have mackie 350 powered speakers. The 350' s have a lot of hiss. The qsc's are quiet! Going to sell the 350s.

Could you give some more infos about the ZX1A speakers, that's a light solution for stéréo !

But what about the stand, the sound , loudness... are you satisfied ?

Thanks

I still have but dont use a pair of JBL MR925 passive speakers. These were new about 2001 perhaps. great sounding speakers.
Purchased before Mars went out of business. The manual says the weight is 57 lbs each. 15 with a horn. Very comparable to what you currently use. I'm guessing the Bass to be not as full but it's a tight not tubby sound. These were the best available at the time in their price range. I'm guessing I paid about $500- each but they probably sell for half that used .
Think JBL Eon with wood cabinet in a passive design. Pretty flat frequency response and side handles were pretty good for a 1 man bear hug or a 2 man carry piece of cake.
