Audio artifact found in Imperial Grand

Post by Hlaalu »

There seems to be a "click" artifact in the Imperial Grand sample. I hear it only on C#4 so far.

To hear it, you have to turn string resonance ON and engage the sustain pedal. Still, the click is not audible at all velocities (but at most anyway). When it's there, it's pretty much audible.

Check the attached file. The first three notes are without the sustain pedal engaged -- no click. The last three are after pressing the pedal. There is a clear click audibile. I briefly run it through Audacity but honestly I couldn't bother checking out the spectrum carefully. Whatever it is, it's clearly not intended. This has forced me to turn string resonance OFF for this piano -- which is a pity, considering how beautiful it is.

Anyone else confirming this?
Thanks

I can't hear any click in your mp3 file at all with my computer headphones. Do you hear it in other samples as well?

Perhaps I should have slowed the speed down. I can't do it right now, I'll do that when I'll be back home. Anyway I can definitely hear it even now. Maybe because I know what to listen for. Anyway the click is immediately after the attack of the note. It's like daa-click-aaaaaaa.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that I have the Nord Triple Pedal connected. Not sure if it triggers different samples, but I don't really think so.

I think I can spot it, but veeeeery faintly. It's slighty left-of-center in the stereo panaroma, right?

Okay, once you know it's there, it seems to be getting louder everytime you hear it...

Not really much I can do to help, other than tell you you're not crazy. :)

Ahahahah that's nice to hear. :D I mean I AM crazy, but for other reasons. :D

Seriously though, if you play the Beethoven "moonlight" sonata you'll get crazy about it. Every time you hit that C# the click... clicks at you.

But I'd like to know if other people can spot it too, because as I said I have the Triple Pedal and I am wondering whether it triggers different samples...

Thanks!

P.S. I admit I didn't dissect the spectrum well enough to tell if it's in the left channel or anywhere...

I didn't try to listen for the click - but is this in the XL sample?

Sometimes the L sample is more clean/sterile, so you could try to play the L instead and see if that is better? In many cases, it sounds just as good and it's hard to tell the difference when you play a tune.

It's indeed the XL sample. I didn't try loading the L to see whether the click is there or not.

I do believe 90% of the times the difference between XL and L is hard to detect...

Yeah, they are often very similar. But usually the more "odd" samples don't make it to the L ...

So give it a try!

Yeah I know there have been click artifacts issues in other XL samples too... what the heck do they put in those? :D

Well, I think it's the sampling process. It's hard to generate even keystrokes without some kind of contraption to hit the keys at a known velocity, and they generate some noise that has to be removed manually, I guess... :-)
