Setlist Programming

Post by FatPapa »

I'm still trying to get up to speed with my new NS3 and have a question about building Setlists or on my Stage 3 which are now called called Songs on this model. I created a list of 60 songs by name using the Nord Sound Manager in Bank 0. These are all are duplicates of one program. How do I change the sounds associated with the duplicates to custom sounds that I need for each song?
Thanks

Hi FatPapa,

there is one word puzzling me: "duplicates". You don't store duplicates of a program in a song: The 5 "song parts" are only referencing given programs. If you want to edit a song, you have to copy a program into another program (not song part) slot and change the desired values. And then reference another program place to your song part. Read the manual p. 28 for that.

And another point: Each bank has 50 songs to be saved, so you probably didn't save 60 songs but 60 song parts within bank 0.

I haven't done it yet, because I'm still not sure in which way I'm going to use that "song" mode. You definitely need a lot of similar programs if you want to assign more or less the same program to a bunch of songs - just with little changes here and there: Every change demands a new program.

Hi-

I think you are on the right track. I created a song for every program that I need, such as Too Much Time On My Hands. I put the songs in the order I want for the setlist the band is playing. Once this master list is created, you can go from song to song with a single click of the right Page button. In addition, you can go into song edit mode and add additional programs that you might need, which then can be selected with each of the 5 program/Song Parts buttons. For example, I have two programs I need for Too Much Time, the opening (which is a sample) and the rest of the song. You can always go back into Song Edit mode and add, move, or change any program within that song. Remember to exit song mode in order to save an edited program.

Right very important, program changes are not saved when you are in song mode. Maybe something to improve in future version...

I'm sorry for not making myself a little more clear. When I created the Setlist with the Nord Sound Manager app, there were 10 existing factory songs in the list. I simply copied the last song and and pasted it below 60 times. I renamed each of the copies to match name of the songs we play in alphabetical order. Because I copied and pasted every one of those songs have identical sounds. Now I want to edit by adding the organs pianos, synths, samples, splits, layers and panels required for each song. How do I do this please?
Maybe Song mode was not the way to accomplish this. There are open banks from M-P. I could create programs and name them with the song names. Perhaps that is a better way.
I just need a simple to call up a patch/song/program however Nord calls them place them where I can easily recall each customized song. I hope that helps explain my question.
Thanks for your help,
Jon

The Nord Sound Manager is a librarian which requires a computer. The Song mode in the NS3 can be used without a computer.

I think it would be much easier to do all of your programming first, then just put the customized programs in whatever location you need them to be. This is what song mode was designed for.

Think of the Songs as "pointers" to Programs (up to 5 per Song) and unless Nord updated it, the Sound Manager won't be able to edit anything more than Song names and their order. You'll need to go to the keyboard itself, select each Song by name and then choose the Programs you need for that Song and save it. It's time-consuming and a bit cumbersome at first, though once you get it set up then it's all there and adding a few new ones as you learn new songs is not bad work at all.

There was probably no reason to make 60 more copies of a Song. Creating a Song is typically your last step, not your first. The only reason to copy a song is if it happens to already include multiple programs you're looking to use in another song.

As Eric said, the sound locations in a Song are merely pointers (aka Aliases if you're a Mac user, Shortcuts if you're a Windows user)... they have no actual sound information in them. All the sounds are in the Programs they point to.

Are the "organs pianos, synths, samples, splits, layers" you want to add to Songs already existing Programs? If so, you can use them in the Songs. If not, you must create those Programs first. Once you have all the "organs pianos, synths, samples, splits, layers" you want (set up in Programs), you can create song-labeled sets of aliases/shortcuts/pointers to bring up the desired Programs using adjacent buttons instead of having them scattered throught your hundreds of Program locations. That's the purpose of Song mode. I hope that helps...
