Increasing low end on custom made patches

Post by Spence895 »

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Nord Stage 3 88 and am in need of some help when it comes to personal sound creation. My biggest problem right now is achieving a fuller sound as much of what I create currently sounds too thin in both studio & live environments. I've messed with the Amp Sim/Eq panel, are there any other functions that would help widen out a sound created from scratch?

Thank you in advance,

Spence

Hi Spence,

welcome to the Nord User Forum!

Are you able to provide some of your sounds/programs to check these? It’s hard to say how to get a fuller sound in general since it also depends on the nature/type of sound, an organ sound will be done in a different way than a piano or a synth sound.

As schorsch said, it depends on the type of sound you are after. EQ is a general setting that applies to any kind of sound. If you want to boost your organ try a setting with the first 3 or 4 drawbars full opren, if you make synth sounds a good idea is to create sounds with one oscilator in lower octave than the other. Square waveforms in low octaves can be used to boost up your sound. Also the filter is a very important factor, an LP filter in a low setting produces low end sounds.
And most important of all is the amplification you use. Do not expect a full fat sound with a cheap quitar amp for example....

As noted above, your best result for the entire keyboard will come from the sound system used (I use two QSC K10s), however if it's a particular instrument you're trying to fatten up, besides the low EQ, you can try two approaches to the midrange - either trimming back on the midrange (freq set around midpoint) and turning up the instrument level, or boosting the midrange with the freq set around 200 Hz or lower to have the low-mids add some fullness to the sound. Take care.

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for the quick response. The sound in question was a piano tone. I'm currently in a trio that covers a lot of classic rock and with only keys, drums and vocals I'm having to fill the gap left without a bass guitarist in the left hand. Made some adjustments based on what you all said and it helped quite a bit. That being said, the patch I've been adjusting was the Bright Piano preset. Any better options or mods made to other sounds that could offer a solid low end while still maintaining a punch to cut through the cymbal highs of the drums?

Best,

Spence

Absent adding a light synth bass to your sound, you may get more of what you're looking for by boosting the low mids around 200 Hz as suggested, but try it with the Low EQ set flat to start off with. In case you want to try it - here's a link to my "utility" program that has a bass set up for the left hand in Panel B that can be pushed back in the mix more. I'd suggest trying the program with both panels on - the Control Pedal is used for the strings and B3. Take care.
