Need some help as a first time NS3C and Sound Manager user

Post by stageCustom »

Hi, having received my first NS3C for evaluation and using the Sound Manager for the first time, I'm facing some simple problems. Theoretically I might return the NS3C within 14 days. Would appreciate some hints. Thanks :)

FIRST the internal memory of 2 GB is almost full (5 MB or so left), leaving no room. So I probably have to delete some things. Which ones? See below.

SECOND being conservative in my actions I tried a backup, and canceled it. It will take about 1 hour, and as everything is brand new I can restore the factory defaults if needed. Or is this a bad strategy? Is it enough to just start Backup, or do I have to select all items from, say, the Program view? Can I reload parts of it later, because my own stuff will have grown a little on the NS3C?

THIRD some basic understanding needed. Am I right?
* Songs contains LINKS to one or more Programs (link dump, few, very small in size)
* Programs are a copy of all keyboard settings, including sounds used (register dump, many, moderate in size)
* Sounds can be one or more Piano, Sample or Synth (sound data, few to many, quite some size)

FOURTH what to delete? Am I right?
* deleting Sound data should yield the biggest savings in memory
* this will affect both Programs and Sounds (if so: how?)

* deleting Programs will help just a little bit
* it will affect Songs, but not Sounds (if so: how?)

* deleting Songs (the 10 defaults) will yield little to nothing of memory space
* it won't affect Programs or Sounds.

FIFTH, how do bundles work? Is it like this? E.g. if I select one Sound, the SM looks up all Programs and Songs where it's used and treats this set of data as a bundle? W.r.t. SECOND, is it a better strategy to back up some bundles? If so, how to define them, or does the SM select bundles automatically?

Hm, not so few simple questions ... Thanks for your help.

The Nord‘s memory is completely compartmentalised in dedicated hardware. Deleting pianos will not free ANY space for synth samples, and deleting samples will not free any space for pianos or programs. Nor vice versa.

A song, as you correctly surmise, links to programs. Editing the programs will edit them in the songs as well.

A program, as you also correctly say, contains full settings for organ, piano, synth and effects for both slots A and B. It does not contain the samples and pianos themselves; if these are deleted from the machine, the program will still be there, but the affected engines will simply not work.

A bundle contains a program plus all its referenced pianos and synth samples, regardless of whether the engine is activated or not (my go-to piano has only one piano active in its saved state, but the synth slots have pads and strings pre-saved that I can layer just by switching them on).

Thanks @WannitBBBad :)
I'll have a closer look later ; -)

P.S.: This is a good recommendation, in dead, which I missed:
"(...) - Save all new samples to memory locations 250 and above so you always know which ones you loaded versus which ones came with your Stage 3. (...)"

Hi Elias,
so I spent some time today again on My Kys To Music. Parts 2 and 3 about the NSM was quite helpful to me:
So, just to comment myself, I was close, but not everywhere :)

FIRST: I decided to upload and remove 145 unused Samples and to download a handful of ones I found interesting.

SECOND: Yes, Backup or Restore is an all-or-nothing appraoch. With FactoryRestore it's a kind of reset.

THIRD, Sounds: Only Piano and SampleLib are relevant w.r.t. freeing memory.

FOURTH: It's good explained in said part 3, and the SM worls logically in this respect.
FIFTH: Similar. Uploading selections of Bundles would be a strategy.

So, I'm ready to explore the NS3C now from a more creative point of view. Thanks again.

Did the same recently with my Stage 2 EX and got around 80MB of valuable Sample storage... :D
Also, because I rarely use Uprigts, even though they sound beautiful, I deleted all of them..

I think I have the best selection of Pianos to cover nearly all kinds of songs...

Bösendorfer Imperial Grand
Steinway Model B - White Grand
Yamaha Bright Grand
Yamaha Studio Grand 2
Yamaha Royal Grand 3D
Kawai Silver Grand
Yamaha CP80 EGrand stereo amped
EP 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8
DX7 Full Tines
Ballad EP1
MKS20 EPiano2
JD800 E.Piano Crystal

The last 2 are from the never-released, but leaked, Gospel Keys collection... they are truly fabulous, make sure to try them out! :keyboard:
