QSC K8.2 as a single speaker
QSC K8.2 as a single speaker
Hi
I am thinking of buying a QSC K8.2 (maybe add a 2nd at a later date). I have seen various threads on them. My question is on do you get phasing issues or maybe lose the Panning effect if you go straight (left and right) from the Nord to the speaker input channels ? I mainly use the piano, rhodes and Wurly sounds. I guess there is the option of running in mono.
Thanks for your input........

Just use a single channel from your Nord. Yes you should get some phase cancellation if you just add them up, but whether you will notice it is another story. In theory the Mono button mixes L and R in a weighted manner (at least that was what the Clavia guys mentioned some years ago) so that would still be better than just adding up.
My feeling is that from best to worse it goes like: stereo > single channel > mono button > added channels.

You'll be fine.
I have this one group with a a mono PA. I press the mono button on my NS3C, and all is well. And, yes, I use a single K8.2 as a stage monitor with these folks. The K8.2 makes a great floor monitor, just remember to set it to "floor monitor" otherwise you'll get more bass than you'd probably want.
Yes, too much bass from an 8" speaker. We live in wonderful times.
However, for the price of a K8.2, you could get a great pair of IEMs, and love your music even more!

I think I have gear issues ....

Thanks - how about losing the Pan effect if you run the left and right to the speaker channels ? I guess if you run in mono you would not have this issues if you only run one cable from the Nord ?

My comment here is not mainly about the QSC K8.2, but about using a single speaker.agmcisaac wrote:.....I mainly use the piano, rhodes and Wurly sounds.....
Have you been running with stereo amplification so far?
I use a single Electrovoice zx-a1 with my Electro 3. The EP Nefertiti Rhodes and the Amped Wurly sound fine with a single speaker.
But most of the Nord-provided acoustic piano sounds do not sound good to me, using my old Electro 3 with a single speaker, whether or not I use the Mono button.
The Royal Grand is an exception and sounds excellent with a single speaker.
The Bambino did not suffer when used with a single speaker, but I was not satisfied with its low end.
If your Nord can run the new White Grand acoustic piano sound, many have reported that it works very well with a single speaker,
I can't use the White Grand on my old Electro 3, but based on their reports I would expect it to work very well with a single QSC K8.2.

Pan is all about Stereo. If you don't use the two channels or two speakers or pan to opposite in the mixer it basically isn't gonna work.agmcisaac wrote:Thanks - how about losing the Pan effect if you run the left and right to the speaker channels ? But the mono button only works on for piano section . Synths ,heck, even the organ has stereo qualities to it. So when I make the balance home or on my headphones I use naturally stereo .Mr_-G- wrote:Just use a single channel from your Nord. When I go to the gig and it's mono if I use one channel the balance between the sounds is off. If I use the two channels are summed up , maybe I have a phase which I really don't hear , but my sounds are balanced as intended so I use it like that. So it's a mess. I don't want to make my sounds to work best with single channel cause when I have a stereo gig I use a lot of the quailities you get from a stereo sound.

Re: QSC K8.2 as a single speaker
I know others disagree with me, but I've had the best results running the stereo outputs into the two channels on the speaker. If there are phase issues, I don't hear them. Running one output to one channel just sounds weaker to me, but I have no science to back it up, only my ear.

Re: QSC K8.2 as a single speaker
This speaker is loud when you are right next to it, but because this speaker is so small and doesn't throw far, it works out better to put it on a speaker stand to raise it a little. You can get a cheap 6 foot lightweight stand. I have a bunch of small powered speakers, not the k8.2 but similar small speakers, and the difference in sound 20 feet away is clearly evident. I have a high powered keyboard amp setup that sits on the floor that I use most of the time, but sometimes the situation calls for the smaller powered speaker and it works better on the stand.

Not in the NS2. It works for everything, including effects that come after the 6 sound generators.alexmarinojR wrote: But the mono button only works on for piano section .
