getting wav files for sample editor

Post by mumbojumbo »

I just got an electro 6 and was disappointed to learn I could not layer synth sounds so I am trying to create a split keyboard with two synth sounds via the sample editor. The sample editor requires wav files, is there any place I can obtain the wav files for the Nord library sounds? If not, where do you get them?

You can't "get them" (extract) from the .nsmp, so you need to resample them.

PS: the fact that on NE6 you cannot layer 2 synths is no mistery, being in its specs and manual, which anyone can read before purchase decision, so I wonder why would you feel disappointed for that.

Get a copy of Audacity (free and excellent) and re-record the sounds you want, then make a new sample file with the sample editor.

I am new to the world of nord and making wave files, do you record them with a mic and a keyboard? or is there a free library out there? Also just to clarify, I assume I can use the sample editor to create a program with for example strings on the lower keys and flute on the upper? I am thinking of Nights in White Satin.

Hi there.

OK, let me spend some time with you on this issue.

Firstly as MaxPiano rightly says, you are unable to layer sampled sounds unlike the stage which has 2 panel layers so you can add 2 organs, 2 pianos and 2 sample / synth units, so a total of 6 usable layers over 2 pages.

In order to do something like what's needed here, you will need a decent audio interface, suitable monitors and / or headphones, a computer with suitable software in order to sample from an instrument, midi cable if you are going to send a midi instruction to the electro to sample and capture at equal velocity and time per note., TRS jack leads from the electro to the interface's inputs (channel 1 and 2), etc.

If you're sampling an instrument, then it's best depending on the detail you want, to work in either of the following methods: 1 - Per note sampling (each key of the 61 key total range). 2: - Min 3rd step sampling (which is the common practice and achieves as good a sample for most cases unless you're requiring precise detail. Even for me this is an easier method).

If you're sampling from the sample synth section, turn velocity off so that you don't sample notes at different volumes.

You will need a copy of Nord Sample Editor 2 x as Sample Editor 3 does not yet support the Electro 6.

Record in audacity using 44.1khz 16 bit format stereo. when you do record, leave a space of at least 1 to 2 seconds between notes, record the entire range you want. save this as a wav file and it's ready to import into Nord Sample Editor.

I can't advise you on V2 sample editor use, only V3 so I will leave that for others to contribute with.

I would say this however. If you're unhappy with not being able to layer sample synth sounds, I'd advise returning the electro and investing in a stage 3 series. This will provide you with what you want and more besides.

I will have to add that when you are dealing with strings, pads and other long sustain sounds, care must be taken when adjusting the loop points. If you just let the program do it there may be audible "jumps" when you hold down the note for a while. This means that you have to study the manual and understand exactly how the sample editor works.

Thanks for the advise, I have decided to send the Electro 6 back and get the Stage 3, which will solve the two synths at once but I will use the information provided to make new samples and sounds that are not stock sounds in the Nord library,

Thanks again for the help

I'm pleased with this news. Which version stage 3 have you purchased? 73, 76 weighted or 88 weighted keys?

If you'd like some help regarding creating samples, I can support you better, because your stage 3 with the latest OS when it arrives, update it to stage 3 OS 2.52, download Nord Sample Editor 3 and I'll walk you through using NSE3 with your stage, also might help you with some sounds, etc.
