Monitor in port is loose

Post by Elias »

Hey. The MONITOR IN port on my Stage 3 is loose. Tried it with many cables that I know are working. The jack moves arounf f a lot. If I touch the plugged cable, I get crackling and sometimes only hear one of the stereo signals.

I bought the thing a month ago so warranty is still in effect. (probably not the right way to say it)

Probably shouldn’t replace them myself. What to do?

Easiest question of the week: Hand it in to get it fixed.

yep, unless you're touring with it and can't be without it, discuss the fault and they might advise opening up if and ONLY IF you're an experienced instrument tech. but I'd say for the time you've had it, in it goes for a replacement.

good luck.

I successfully managed to replace a broken USB connector on my Stage 2, it's no rocket science and can be done if you - or someone you know and trust - has experience in soldering and a basic knowledge about how not to screw up things ;-)

In this case, though replacing the faulty Monitor In jack is arguably even easier than what you did, I would not by any mean recommend any DYI solution since Elias' Nord Stage 3 is still under warranty (which a manual repair attempt would void).

I had this exact problem with mine. I opened it up and saw the monitor input jack was mounted on a pc board, so I decided not to fool with it. I wanted to bring my acoustic/elect guitar into it, and just used another input in my mixer instead. Then, a few months ago I had a need to get the headphone out of my iPad to go somewhere, so I added an extension to a “too short” 1/8” cable I had - it works perfectly! Turns out the extension has a very slightly more bulbous tip on it.
There was a thread a while back about this - the poster knew exactly what connector to look for.
Hope this can help you out.

You may also want to try another type of cable ... Many minijack connectors appear to be a tad small, and in my experience can be a bit loose in the Nord.

It seems that he tried with several cables already, so it sounds like the connector itself is broken/deformed. I would send contact the dealer for service or replacement.

Sorry, should have been more clear - my point was more that many cables used with iPhones (or other phones) appear to be a bit on the small side, whereas more "conventional" pro audio cables have connectors that give a better fit. At least that is the case on all of my Nords.

So the suggestion was more to try with another TYPE of cable, if the OP hadn't tried a pro audio cable with a wider plug. Otherwise the replacement may be identical.

But if course there could be a defect too.
