Inconsistent key resistance, Stage 3 Compact

Post by Elias »

Hey.
I just recently bought a Stage 3 Compact and after playing it for a while, I noticed how the keys vary in resistance. A lot. The instrument in it self is amazing but this has to be fixed. I took some old weight set and compared the keys. This low A is extremely heavy.

I'm not a keyboard mechanic/technician, but is this an easy fix? In any case, I will contact the retailer.

Also, a side note: the importer for Clavia in Finland just recently went bankrupt. Hope that won't be a problem…

In my experience, many keyboards have a "burn-in" phase. They may loosen up a bit after being played for a while. If your board is new, it may be that you simply have played (in) some keys more than others. Of course, it may be something else in your case, but have you checked if there is a more systematic difference? I often find the middle keys are the ones that loosen up first, compared to e.g. the most extreme keys that you usually tend to play less.

Yes, I second that "burn in" phase. I have NS3C, I had to put books on the keys each night to loosen the springs up a bit. And I have experienced this on many new keyboards, not exclusive to the nord.

The resistant keys were not at all systematic. Two low white keys right next to each other and one key in the middle, one more in the higher register. I called the retailer and he wanted to switch the Stage to a new one.

How long have you been doing this process? The NS3 compact keyboard is also a bit too stiff for me (compared to my Elektro 3).

I might be wrong about this, but I think its intended to be stiffer than the Electro keybed.

Yeah I think your right it is intended to be stiffer than electro. At least it still is stiffer than my old electro 3. Not sure about the newer electros

I'd say I was weighing the keys down nightly for at least a week. Probably no more than 2 weeks though. I'd say that pretty much did it.

I also switched from an electro 3 to a S3C and noticed the S3 keys were stiffer. I was concerned this may be a problem, but after two gigs with the S3, I don’t notice it any more. Easy to tell the difference playing side by side, but in real world usage, it’s fine (for me).

I havent owned an Electro but i tested a 6d a while ago. The S3C is noticeably stiffer, but better for dynamic playing. Just a matter of getting used to it.
