Nord Stage 3 - mixed feelings after purchase

Post by lukas_music »

Hi!
I have been a Nord Clavia user for a long time. For several days I have been the owner of Nord Stage 3 88 (last OS). I previously used Stage 2 EX 88 and I had the opportunity to compare them with each other. I have mixed feelings after this purchase... Let's focus on some issues:

1.
Can I have the same leslie sound as in NS2EX? (NS3s leslie doesn't have this beautiful crunch sound of NS2EX and also there seems to be a huge "hole" in the lower bass spectrum, it's uninspiring)
I prefer the reverb to be at the end of the audio path, like in my NS2EX. I don't like the current setting, it sounds very bad to me. Is it possible?

2.
2 years after the premiere, It still have problem and cuts polyphony in synth section when using A+B panels for pad sound. The samples don't sound as good as NS2EX in the synth section also. They sound synthetically, plastic... Why?

3.
I don't like the effect parameter scales being changed from 127 to 100. The old settings from NS2EX to NS3 in the effects section are not translated correctly. These things are frustrating, they waste time.

4.
Taking illuminated knobs, especially from "freq cut of", is very bad decisiion. This is so needed in a live situations!

5.
It's a big shame that I can't translate my sounds from the synth section in NS2EX to NS3. There is a lack of FM synthesis for example. Unison also sounds totally different so I can't replicate my patches. Clavia shouldn't take old functions, just add new ones...

I compared my NS2 to NS3 wrt reverb and found that on NS2 the reverb is also *before* the Leslie.
But it's not so prominent and sound so "swirly".
I put in a request for moving the reverb after the Leslie but apparently it's authentic to put it before so this won't happen.

There's a possibility to change the balance between bass-rotor and horn in the menu; maybe you can change that to your taste ?
Also I've read that the overdrive in the amp-section has a different effect than the one in the Leslie-section.
Might be also something to try.

Apart from that (and your other points) NS3 is a new machine, loosely related to the NS2; most notably a completely different synth section.

Edit : Just saw the other thread with similar responses from Baekgaard.
Pls. keep questions/remarks to one thread; he already gave you all the answers there.

You can always put a reverb unit on the outputs if you want the reverb effect after the leslie.

I do not want to connect additional devices to the outputs. There should be a choice of routing this signal to reverb and the choice of old leslie or new leslie sim. I hope clavia will do something about it in the future.

1. You really didn't ask a question.
2. It doesn't appear that you have mixed feelings from the information you provided. Just negative thoughts.
3. You never mentioned anything about why you purchased an NS3 and what you like about it.
4. Information about the issues you listed have been available on this forum and on the Nord website for quite some time.
5. So, what was the purpose of your post and how can we help?

I don't have my NS2 anymore so can't check.
But I did test when I had both because I thought that the NS3 put the reverb in front of the leslie, which I didn't like.
Closer inspection led me to believe that it was the same on NS2 (so before) only a lot less prominent and swirly.
If you still have a NS2 could you pls. check ?

Anywayz, the request to Clavia to put reverb always at the end of the chain is one of the first requests on the bug-sheet (which I also did put into a request to Clavia).

The NS2 manual is not 100% explicit, but at page 39 it says:

About the Rotary effect’s signal routing
The Rotary effect is placed after the panel effects in Nord Stage 2’s signal path .

so after the panel/slot effects but before the global ones (comp + reverb) which, according to the manual on the same page, are positioned at (before) OUT1&2.

Hi, maybe a stupid question but how do you check if the internal signal chain is Reverb -> Leslie or Leslie -> Reverb? I could check this since I own both a NS2 and a NS3, but don't know how to idnetify this ....

Check this https://chris55.github.io/ns3-program-viewer/ awesome tool to visualize NS2/3 programs and re-create them on the other instrument!

There are no stupid questions :D
If you put reverb to the max (and most spacious so hall from the top of my head) with slow leslie and you 'stab' a chord (so short enough to hear the reverb) what do you hear ?
If the reverb follows the leslie 'swirl' then the reverb is before the leslie.
Maybe it's more obvious with fast leslie, don't remember.
