Stage 3: Advanced Programming Question.

Post by stopmakingsense »

Q: On a two oscillator program/patch, is there a way to program one of the Oscillators to drop down slightly in pitch during the attack? I'm going for a sound in which it's slightly detuned just at the attack but joins together in unison for the sustained sound. I'm going for a Lyle Mays signiture sound performed on Oberheim 4 voice heard on the following Pat Metheny track...

It's the warm square wave sound.

Here's a link below...

Lyle Mays uses it a lot on the 1978 Pat Metheny Group album and Offramp album etc.

Side note: I've had the Stage 3 for less then a week, and I'm surprised how easily it is to program the sounds I've used over the years. I've already got most of them figured out, but this pitch drop one has me scratching my head.

Thank you in advanced for any suggestions.

I'm having some success mixing a triangle wave with alto recorder sample #91, but sample 91 attack goes upwards in pitch instead of downwards.

I am not expert on this, but I'd be experimenting with using aftertouch as a pitch mod, then learning to slam the keys on the initial attack and then backing off. BTW, lovely sounds Lyle Mays gets on his keys, right?

Put the osc in pitch mode and use the mod envelope (inverted) to affect the pitch by turning up the mod env effect on the pitch. With an inverted envelope it'll drop down for the attack and come back up for the decay. Adjust those to taste. I've not dug into the Stage 3 synth section much (been spending too much time between my A1 and Lead 3 on that category), but that's the general approach I'd take to getting that little dip. Although I like @cphollis' suggestion to use aftertouch so you can "play" that dip too, although what I'd probably do is use AT to mod the decay on the envelop instead, either lengthen or shorten it depending on what makes sense for your playing style, and maybe also mod the amount of dip applied.

Thank you 23skidoo! I'm sure that's what I'm looking for. I'll give it a shot.

That did the trick. Patch successfully completed thanks to 23skidoo, and now I'm having fun with AT pitch bend thanks to cphollis.

I am not aware of any way to put the Mod Envelope into inverted mode on the Stage 3 - how did you accomplish this?

looks like I got some files crossed! I'll blame it on old age and too many dead brain cells. My sincere apologies, Mr. G.

anyway, I have in the meantime busted out the G2 version and it has an enhanced chirpiness to it. Perhaps that's my cue to do some sampling...

bless, pablo
