Distorted sound from output #2

Post by Scorps »

Hello!

I've found out that the CH2 output gives out distorted sound.

Headphone output is okay, outputs 3 and 4 are also okay, so it has to be a problem with the output itself.

Lowering the volume helps a bit, but some sound guys are already complaining about my low output level, I'd have to turn the master volume to about a quarter to eliminate the distortion.

Here's a MP3 example of the distortion. It's in the right channel. I'm showing different sounds, effects are off (at some point I crank up the Leslie distortion to the max and then off again). Some reverb at the end too. Audacity shows asymmetric waveform in the right channel:

Does anyone have an idea what may cause this distortion and how to get rid of it? My Stage is old, but otherwise works as a charm and I don't want to retire it already.

I can't tell if it's Ch1 or ch2 but I got this same distortion on my NS3C too. It's really annoying! And it's more noticeable on Rhodes and Wurlitzers.
JUST TO MAKE CLEAR, I use mogami cables on RME fireface UFX+ with 4db in and NO GAIN AND NO CLIPPING.

To make a more "scientific" test, have you tried with just a simple (sine or other) wave produced by the Synth, I mean a pure waveform with no effects, no filter, no envelopes, etc. ?

Great damages are not easy to solve. I sometimes had keys on my workbench with similar issues. Older ones had failed capacitors (at Nord there must be 2 rounds ones side by side). Newer keys also had come up with some failed SMD-mounted transistor, i don´t like to chance manually. This would be a bad diagnostis...

If it would be not software-related, you should clean the Output-Jacks carefully with some Fader-Spray and (even if you already did) check the cables you use twice...
