Octave layered piano sound workaround?

Post by dmingay »

So, we all know you the NE5 doesn't allow you to double up two acoustic pianos sounds and make them play at different octaves (just so you can get that big sound, such as played on Olivers Army)?

The only workaround I can think of is to import a sample version of a piano and use that in conjunction with the NE5 piano sound.

Has anyone tried it and if so, where did they get the sampled piano library from?

The Nord sample library has a few suitable samples for this

You can program a arduino or something ssimilar to receive midi from your nord and send it back to your nord. On that way you can implement other tricks like adding an 5th, octave and so on. Also I managed to implement pitchbend that I control with a joystick.

Both superb suggestions - will try the sample route first...

Arduino is great too, but maybe beyond my limited capabilities!

You can do the same with a PC/Mac or a tablet with appropriate MIDI processing software (e.g. with MidiOX or Cantabile on Windows, Mainstage or MIDI Patchbay on Mac, iMidi Patchbay or Camelot on iPad...) or using the built-in MIDI Routing capabilities of most DAWs (Cubase, Logic, Reaper, Ableton,...)

I was using an NE5 for a while and found several nsmp files that worked great for octave doubling with the piano section.
Nords: NE2, NS2 88, NS3 Compact x 2
Live rig: NS3, Vent, Radial KL-8, Shure PSM-900 IEM Rig, UE18 & UE7 IEMs.
Studio: Hammond A-101 & Leslie 122, Yamaha CP-80, Yamaha S90, NS2, DSI Prophet-6, Vent II, Roland JX-8P.

I've successfully tried using the sample piano nsmp, one octave up - it works really well and makes a big difference.

One happy NE5 owner again!
