Electro or Piano?

Everything about Nord keyboards in general; which one to choose, the sound manager, sample editor, and general discussion about the sample and piano libraries.

Electro or Piano?

Post by Ohardee »

Hey folks, I’ve just booked a gig that’s going to require some good keys sounds (piano, wurly etc), some nice vintage pads, key splits, and potentially one-sample triggers. Ideally like to have some easily maluable fx too, delay and one in particular. Playability a concern but I’m no concert pianist so not extra fussy. Just looking for ease of use and good sounds. Any suggestions or insight welcome. Please and thank you.

Off the top of my head (hardly definitive):

Choose an Electro if you think you’ll ever dip your toe into B3/Vox/Farfisa territory. The Piano series lacks the organ engine.

Choose a Piano if a more faithful acoustic piano action is important to you. (There are plenty of fans and detractors alike of the Electro’s HP action.)

Regarding portability, the Electro is a little easier to schlep around.

Nord Piano 4 and Electro 6HP (the only version with a hammer action) are the same price. If you don't need the Electro's organ or light travel weight, go for the Piano, which has the benefits of better piano action, 88 keys, triple pedal. Piano/EP sounds and the other features you mentioned are essentially the same.

If your gig will require you to play Wurli sounds, that sounds like the gig is playing rock covers. If yes, then you will need the organ sound, and that would favor an Electro (perhaps one of the Electro versions with the hammer action).
