NLA1 - need advice on split approach

Post by kelpchofs »

I don't own an A1 but it remains a top choice for next board.

I have a song where a synth bass sound is needed for the verses, played with the left hand. Then in choruses I need that same synth bass but with a lead synth sound in the right hand. Due to the 49 keys I can't have a split going the whole time because the bass part in the verses uses the keys that will eventually be needed for the chorus.

How would you approach setting this up and quickly and accurately switch between the two?

Thanks!

What I would do in this case is simply program two performances next to each other and that way you could go back and forth with a single knob click.

You could also set the split and set up multi focus on the bass part and switch the octave as you play, but this is a little trickier to do. That way you could extend the range of the bass without changing the split point.

Thanks. Both ideas seem reasonable. Grabbing the program knob and clicking it "just once" seems like it could invite trouble; I'd be doing this in the space of one beat of a song. I guess it depends on how sturdy and "clicky" the knob is!

Interesting dilemma, I think I'd do it as per DJKeys' first suggestion. But I was toying around with a way to do it using the mod wheel. How about this? Set up a performance with a split - put the bass program in slot 1 (below split) and also in slot 3 (above split). Set it up so the notes are continuous across the split. Then put the bass program in slot 2 (below split), and your lead program in slot 4. Then use the mod wheel to control level on all 4 programs. One position has slot 1 and 3 at full, slot 2 and 4 at zero, the other is vice versa. It's not that much fiddling to get it all set up, and using the mod wheel might be safer than the program knob. But if you need to mod wheel to do other stuff for your lead sound, I guess it won't work.

Edit: you could also use a control pedal for this method and never have to take your hands off the keys

Another approach is to just use two different single programs (I sometime use 4 for a single song), one for the bass, one for the lead, and add them individually to a performance. Save the performance with Bass program in 1, Lead in 2. Turn off all but the bass. Save the performance again.

Then, you can just hit a switch to change from one to the other.

Thanks all! I do have to play both sounds at the same time, which makes me think CountFosco's suggestion may be the most elegant. I'll definitely give the ideas a spin to see what works best... when I eventually get the board! (hoping for the May '19 timeframe)

Exactly what Countfosco said.
Embrace the powers of performance mode, bringing parts in and out, layering and morphing them (if necessary all at the same time) with the control pedal.

Gives the Lead a whole new level of versatility.

I did not read carefully at first and was not aware you needed to play both sounds simultaneously.
